The Internal Struggle

A crowded mind I tend to bear-

And worthy thoughts are hard to tear,

From a loud cacophony of raucous voices dwelling there

Often voices that I sought

Were the meekest of the lot

Keeping my own secrets in the darkest, deepest hiding spots

Voices that I should ignore,

Ah! They love to reap and roar!

Ravaging the smallest bits of me that I would bring to fore

Silence, I in strife beseech-

Cut off this needless fount of speech!

Alas- for now they do obey- and I am left- with naught to say

What an enigmatic piece. I feel as if poetry is subjective rather than objective and each person takes what they will from any given poem. This piece resonates with me on multiple levels but the verbiage is the most striking part for me. I find myself pondering each line searching for individual meaning which is inevitably there. Our inside voices tell us just as many truths as they do lies. Well done.

There's no way that I can word my admiration for your writing in such a way that has been done here. Nonetheless, I may not have the same knowledge on poetry to give you feedback like others can, though it doesn't change how much your style strikes me and how emotions are evoked, in each piece.

You're talented, thank you for sharing you're work.

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

This is my favorite poem I've read on this sub, which is saying a lot considering how many great writers there are! It is beautiful and very emotional- the kind of poetry I think most people can appreciate and connect with. Also has an interesting rhyme scheme which I think is very hard to execute well, so good job there too!

I find it difficult to respond to praise of this magnitude. Thank you!

This is a great piece! I honestly don’t know a ton about poetry, so I don’t feel like I can offer you valuable advice on structure/or any really meaningful critique. BUT I can say with 100% certainty that I really enjoyed this, and I felt like you did a great job articulating how loud the mind can be - I like the way you focused on that to convey the power of mental illness. Keep it up!

Wow, this is an incredibly elegant illustration of the busyness of consciousness. The feeling of lostness of turning to places one shouldn't and not hearing the voices one should; this conjures the concept of "grasping" for me- reaching outwards into the world to resolve one's suffering. I especially love the final line of that leaves us with an uncertain nothingness . Perhaps a blissful end to grasping?

Very close to what I was aiming for in the last line. I meant to portray more of a sense of helpless emptiness, the feeing you get after a mental burnout. Poetry is highly subjective though, thank you for sharing your own feelings and for the kind words!

Very very cool.

The way that this is written, the vocabulary. It drew me in and I loved it. I hope to be able to write this well someday.

This is relatable on so many levels, and your articulation is really poignant. Great work

Continuously reaping and roaring! I'm new to the poetry world, but this shook me. Well versed, reading aloud helped me dive into the depth of your lines 👏

It feels like all the parts that are within every human and the power struggle they have with each other.

This is one of the most relatable pieces I have ever read. Everything from the imagery to the rhyme scheme is incredibly well done! Anyone who has felt helpless and/or depressed can definitely see themselves in this selection. In addition to the relatability this poem does a magnificent job of being blunt yet smooth in it’s delivery. Although the rhyme scheme isn’t flashy it works incredibly well and enhances the introspective vibe.

I agree this is very relatable. I enjoyed the structure and the portrayal of the message. It reminded me of my late diagnosis of ADD and how I reacted. The voices shouting all at once begging to be heard and all getting ignored, demanding silence only to be heard later, preach! Lol The imagry developed from the word choice was great!
