Why does it seem everyone in 80's movies had guns?

I've been watching a bunch of older movies recently, particularly from the 80's. It seems most mainstream movies, even comedies had a character carrying a gun, or some action sequence thrown it around for the climax. Does it had something to do with gun restrictions back then compared to today, or was it simply a Hollywood fad?
