Illinois has some of the biggest deer taken annually anywhere in the nation (I think we still hold the current record for white-tails), nice to see IDNR get a win against poaching.

Just a fine with no time, this will encourage more poaching.

33

Yup. At this point the fine is just a fee if you get caught.

23

This is why punitive fees, to remotely be effective, have to be a portion of income and not a flat dollar amount.

32

In this case my complaint isn't even income based. 4 years of out of state deer tags and hunting license and habitat stamp would have been 4*(300+57.50+5)=$1450. This means that if your rate of being caught was less than 20% you'd save by skipping tags, even assuming he wasn't also getting all the advantages of illegal baiting, hunting at night, hunting out of season, electronic calls, rifles, and everything else. It is a real let down to those of us who struggle to keep track of all of the rules.

Exactly needs to be a percentage of worth. Either that be an individual or a corporation.

Could be worse, could be not caught and fined at all. I agree there should be higher penalties but I'll take this as it's better than nothing.

We are not the Sheriff of Nottingham punishing peasants who hunt on the kings land. This is a case where a fine, and not jail time, is appropriate.

Now a different debate on that low ass fine is a different story.

1

I agree these are not peasants snaring rabbits for enough to eat. I disagree with the idea that a fine is sufficient punishment for repeated, intentional, armed violations for the theft of trophy bucks.

"He was charged in February 2020 by Pope County State’s Attorney Jason Olson. Dudek pleaded guilty in late 2021, resulting in $8,697 for fines and fees that include $7,000 in restitution to IDNR.
The case was the result of an extensive investigation by conservation authorities in Illinois, Tennessee, North Carolina, and New York."

What kind of asinine privilege is this?

Intensive investigation from FOUR state agencies and only a punishment of less than $8,700?

It should be 10x that amount along with a few months of jail time.

Good. Fuck this guy. People like this should get their hunting privileges taken away for life.

Pope Co has gotta get their money elsewhere now that pot is legal and it's not as profitable to harrass campers.
