Sushi King on Grandview

4 rangoon for $6.50

Filling - 7/10

Wrapper - 9.5/10

Sauce - 3/10

Value - 3/5

Overall - 22.5/35

Filling - I was very impressed with the amount of filling in these rangoon. The bundle style these are made in aren’t very common, and I wish more restaurants would adopt the method. It makes for a ton of filling and an excellent rangoon to wonton ratio. As for the filling flavor - it was good, but I wasn’t wow-ed. It was on the border of sweet and savory, staying in the middle without committing to one side. I think the rangoon would have benefited from a more defined flavor profile. As is, it’s a good tasting filling, but not great.

Sauce - I did not like the sauce. It’s a chili sauce which I have no issues with (see last week’s review of Nida’s chili sauce… I could have eaten it with a spoon), but this one fell flat. I don’t think it elevates the rangoon. The level of spice was nice, but it didn’t really have any other flavors to compliment it. I found it to be quite bland and preferred the rangoon without it.

Wrapper - In my opinion, the wonton is the star of this rangoon. It isn’t the typical wonton wrapper; it’s more like a spring roll wrapper. Very light, very well cooked. Not too oily which is excellent. The wrapper is very thin and crispy which compliments the rangoon filling because it lets the filling come through without overwhelming it with too much wrapper. I cannot say enough good things about this wrapper; it really is one of the best I’ve ever had.

Value - These rangoon are pretty average price wise. At a little over a buck a pop, they stay in the solid middle of the price range, maybe the middle top, but still not expensive enough to be rated any lower.

Overall - While the filling to wrapper ratio was perfect, and the wrapper was impeccably light and crispy, a slightly underwhelming filling and bland sauce bumped these rangoon to the mid tier. They are worth trying to experience what I have dubbed the ‘bundle’ wrapping method, but they need a sauce that better compliments them if they want to be top tier.
