New racing rescue not drinking water.

Advice

As the title says our newly adopted racing grey isn’t drinking. He arrive at ours on Sunday and didn’t eat for a day and is now eating. We are soaking his food so he gets some water that way but, he’s not drinking from a bowl.

Could this be because he’s overwhelmed and anxious of his new surroundings? We have tried different bowls still to no avail. He is beyond nervous but is making strides every day!

Any advice would be amazing!

This was Violet when I first got her. I think she was so scared and in shell shock for a couple months that the only way I could get water down her was to put her food in a soup like mixture of water. She finally started to settle in. She began to realize that all of her surroundings were here to stay and finally started drinking on her own. Give him time, he will drink when he is comfortable and thirsty. Does he like a particular treat yet? Maybe try and scatter the treats around the water bowls. After he has his snack he might be inclined to have a look at the water…

I think I’m worried about it as I know how much water I need etc. hopefully he will come round. I’ll try leaving some treats around for him.

I was extremely worried as well. It’s troubling!! He will definitely come around. Of course as long as the vet says he’s in good health 🙏 I have a sneaking suspicion he is just extremely stressed right now. It’s common with greys when they are new. Good luck!! Extra hugs for him and smooches!!

Maybe dumb question but is the water bowl elevated high enough?

It’s on the floor, I’ll try and put it onto something and see if he takes it then

Elevation is key. Ours has his water bowel just below neck. It’s a good 18”

I’m getting my first greyhound on Saturday so I’m no expert but I have heard and read that they need the bowls elevated to between 16-18 inches so they can comfortably drink since their legs and necks are so long. Hope this helps

Try some beef broth. Or chicken broth.

Unsalted please!

My Grey has kibble soaked in warm water to eat and rarely drinks extra in the winter. He has more extra drinks in hot weather. His pee isn’t really strong so I don’t worry.

Yeah we have started to do this, hopefully he’s getting enough water in him.

Greyhounds are poor drinkers. Soaking the food is best.

Oh great to know!

He's probably just getting used to his new home. I would just give him some time.

Hopefully this is the case and once he’s a little more settled he will take to it.

My greyhound was the same as yours when I adopted her. I was able to make her drink by mixing water with some low sodium chicken broth for a couple of days.

I would try raising the bowls. Raised feeders are ideal from what I’ve always been told for their digestion and overall comfort.

I know some greys don’t care but when it comes to water - my girl def does. I have a corgi/lab who has his bowls on a mat on the floor and then hers are raised. If her water bowl is empty and his is full - she will not drink from his bowl.

As others have said, you gotta get creative with including moisture in food and snacks. Eventually he will start drinking on his own. He’s probably just anxious and still settling in. The calmer you are, the more relaxed he will be. Try not to stress over it unless he’s showing very active signs of dehydration.

Raises bowls are a cause of GSD. If you raise a bowl it ahould be rased no more than a few inhes. If you soak the food, grey might not need additional water. Ours are raw fed and drink once a day. Place a few bowls all over the place and give it a few days. We run a reacue and dogs do fogure these thing whether they are from kennels or street. It's only natural. Best of luck!

My girl is a shocker with drinking. I think when they’re racing, they have limited access to water to keep weight down and stuff like that. Mine forgets that there’s always water there, then will have a moment, see the bowl and it’s almost like she goes “oh yeah!” and then drinks for like a minute or two!

Mine are the same. Water??? Oh yes. Forgot about that and then they just drink forever and a day......emptying the bowl.

Elevate the bowl if you are putting it on the ground. Also, maybe add a bit of low sodium chicken broth to the water to entice the hound with the smell.

Try floating some treats in his water bowl. (Not ones that sink)

We had a bowl on the floor & now we have one raised about 12" and they use it. However, their favorite is a large bucket (about 4 gallon) that we use to fill bird baths and keep inside the house by the back door. It's usually half full, and we put it outside on warm days or when they run around like maniacs. I'm not sure if buckets were used at the track, but they like drinking from it both indoors & outdoors.

Always elevate bowls, use different bowls around the house, my grey is an awesome drinker so don’t follow the stereotype “greyhounds are poor drinkers.” I suggest metal bowls, plastic, ceramic, strewn around the house. Always elevated. As others suggest low sodium broth mixed in water or on food. When my boy was sick if Ross treats in his water and even his swimming pool to get him to consume water while snorkeling for the treat. Just stay calm and offer him water and show him where the other bowls are. My grey loves ice cubes in his water too!
