A couple of very close guesses there!
The answer: the item I was welding wasn't particularly stable on the table, so when I washed over the weld it started rocking like an angry ghost was going to pop out and bite my nose off.
First time I've seen those micro ripples from that vibration, thought it was nifty before I ground it flush :)

I did some welding near a vertical shaft impact crusher one time and the extremely high frequency caused an effect like this. Could it be something similar?

I was thinking crazy machine shaking, like a grader or something with a vibra-plate. But the frequency would make more sense than that.

I have to do this to wire run holes so that the wires don’t get caught on sharp edges. De-burring tool works but it’s not as smooth as melting the edges like in your picture. It’s never meant to look pretty and always gets covered up by another pipe welded on top

Haha, believe you me I have the same feeling as you, when I manage to lay an attractive bead I only celebrate it with myself (my ally work is still a very uneven collection of blotches), the reason why I posted this photo is because I wasn't intending for any fancy surface finish, but because of the amusing way it happened I just wanted to play a guessing game, NOT a "look at my weld" ego stroke
