CoCo’s Grill on 5th; 5 rangoon for $7.50
Filling: 8/10
Sauce: 8/10
Wrapper: 7/10
Value: 3/5
Total: 26/35
Filling: I was very impressed with CoCo’s filling. Calling it ‘decadent’ may be an over exaggeration, but just by a little bit. It’s one of the sweet rangoons which are much rarer than their savory counterparts. I sometimes thing that sweet rangoons can overdo the sweetness and make it more of a dessert than an appetizer, but I think CoCo’s had a really good balance. I was happy to see they were made in the four prong folding technique that I’ll refer to as the ‘butterfly’ method. This resulted in a very generous amount of filling. I think the filling was the star of this rangoon, and this wrapping technique allowed it to shine.
Wrapper: As mentioned, this rangoon utilized the butterfly technique which I much prefer to the triangle method. The wrapper was good, but not great. It took the backseat and allowed the filling to be the star, which I think was smart, but I don’t know how much it really added to the dish. It wasn’t oily which I appreciated, but the wrappers were a bit stiff - almost as if it was thicker than the usual wrapper. It didn’t take me out of the experience, but it didn’t make it more enjoyable.
Sauce: This was a very unique sauce, and I think it really went well with the filling. The sauce was very acidic and sour which was necessary for such a sweet filling. If the sauce was sweeter, I think it would have been bordering on sickly sweet. But with this nice vinegary sauce, it didn’t overpower my senses. Very tasty, very complementary to the rangoon.
Value - At 1.50 per rangoon, it’s in the middle price range. I appreciate that it came with 5 of them instead of the typical 4, but definitely not cheap.
Overall - I was very pleased with these rangoon. The filling flavor was fantastic, and there was an excellent wrapper to filling balance. The sauce partnered beautifully with it and really elevated the dish as a whole. The wrapper was the low point of this rangoon, but its only real flaw was not being outstanding. Overall, very solid and worth a trip to the area.
