When he’s in the past he alters the future so when he returns to the future it’s not the one he came from where he was trying to save Hina & shook Naoto’s hand it’s a different future where that didn’t happen so he wouldn’t be asleep he’d be doing whatever the Takemichi from that alternate future is doing

That happens when he changes the past. That's also the reason why he can't find Naoto and doesn't have his number for example, cause they weren't close like in the present timeline (adult Naoto and Takemichi). Practically, they didn't work together to save Hina when the past changes. Naoto probably writes Mitchi's number on paper or something like that, in case it's not in the phone.

What I think is when a person goes to the past and change it, it will create a new timeline where the past(present) will effect the future. So I think the og timeline or the previous few will still continue to go on because u technically cannot cannot stop the flow of time
