Met another van lifer at my work. Well, previously
I work at a retirement home where I’ve kept living in a van a secret. I’m not actively hiding it from people I just don’t want my boss or the CEO to find out I’ve been living out front for the past two months. I get showers, free coffee and can use the pool so it’s too sweet of a gig to get fired over for being homeless.
But the oldies talk, even the ones you least expect. A regular comes up who mostly makes very little small talk but one time they asked me what state plates my van has, thought it was a little odd but they are out of state so I told them. They were on to me..
And then today they came up to get what they needed we said our pleasantries and then they were on their way. They sit with another regular of mine and chat it up until regular number 2 comes up and says
“so i hear you got a van”
So I get all excited and start telling them about it a little bit showing pictures and stuff and they tell me about their sprinter they’ve had for almost 20 years. Shows me some pictures and it’s a total beaute. Some real craftsmen ship went into it and it’s way sick. We talk about where we’ve takin our vans yada yada, how they bought a van overseas to trip around and it was a super pleasant conversation. They even came down later and offered a part for the van they don’t use anymore that looked pretty expensive. Gotta love the generosity
When I took this job I was worried I was going to be working for some rich ass holes (it’s in an uppidity town out west) and have been so surprised how sweet some of these people are.
This human is clearly well off but we were about to talk a little bit about the struggles of living in our vehicles for extended amounts of time. And it seems like we’ve had a similar start moving to the state im “living” in now by spending the first several years in a vehicle
