"There is nothing here to indicate that this music isn’t the result of a board meeting between band members and an aging major label A&R guy spit balling ideas based on trending sounds and musical genres. Okay, the A&R guy would say, excitedly brushing his gel-soaked comb over back into place, sweat pooling in the deep furrows of his spray tanned forehead. We need an undercurrent of Coldplay and hip hop, but mix it up with EDM and Autotune, and get some ‘80s synth effects in there. I want handclaps and echo! Drench it with reverb! And make sure it will play well during an NFL game."~source
If there is a name for the modern sound of the rock music that Imagine Dragons have conquered with then Stomp Rock is as accurate as any. It's anthem Pop Rock hooks with lyrical Alternative Rock melancholy, heavy percussion filled Hip Hopesque Beats, and occasional Electronic synths to glue it all together. Rock music hasn't died, it's just become mixed thoroughly with the genres that surround it. You are almost as likely to hear these tracks on Pop radio as on Alternative Rock stations but they dominated the airwaves regardless. Many bands have done their part over the last decade to make this genre mixing possible and digestible. Producers and musicians such as Alex da Kid, Ed Sheeran, Jack Antonoff, and Ryan Tedder have shown the ability to mix all genres within pop and produce for a huge variety of artists besides just themselves. Welcome to the new age.
Ultimately this is mostly a Pop Rock list but with the genre blurring twist. I made this set in 2018, but have not seen any alternative name by the press despite before or after of it being a thing.
Bad take? Literally (not figuratively, literally) the only Coldplay song fitting the description is Hymn For The Weekend. Same goes for OneRepublic and Counting Stars which is more bonfire-folk-inspired than anything.
