Chronic Pain & BJJ

Technique Discussion

I don't know if other people may have this issue, but I trained BJJ from 2018-2020 (pre-pandemic) and took a long break even after we were allowed to return to gyms because I thought I needed to recover from a repetitive strain injury. After many doctor's appointments and occupational therapy appointments, I recently found out I have Madelung's deformity in both of my wrists which predisposes me to chronic pain. However, I loved BJJ. I always thought I would be able to go back but now I don't know if it's a reasonable thing to do. My doctor said I can return if I wrap my wrists, but I'm still in graduate school and find myself feeling like I need to "conserve" wrist strength. For context, I guess, I'm only a 4-stripe white belt so it shouldn't be a big deal to stop but it's the only sport I've ever enjoyed.

Does anyone with chronic wrist pain still train and how have you altered your BJJ technique to accommodate this? Or is it impossible and I should just let BJJ go and find something else?
