Character's Who Know: Jon's True Parentage and Robb's Will (Spoilers Extended)
Character's Who Know: Jon's True Parentage and Robb's Will
Another day without winds, another post by yours truly (at least we got a new notablog post for the first time in a month, heh). Yesterday I posted about the Characters Who Know a Stark's Location and looking back I feel dumb bc instead of just not including Jon/Robb, I should have used Jon's parentage for Jon and Robb's Will information for Robb. So that's what this post is about. Characters who either know who Jon's true parents are or witness Robb's Will being signed.
Background
Robb's Will
While discussing their planned attack on Moat Cailin, Robb also has several of his lords/ladies fix their seals to his will:
I have no son as yet, my brothers Bran and Rickon are dead, and my sister is wed to a Lannister. I’ve thought long and hard about who might follow me. I command you now as my true and loyal lords to fix your seals to this document as witnesses to my decision.”
A king indeed, Catelyn thought, defeated. She could only hope that the trap he’d planned for Moat Cailin worked as well as the one in which he’d just caught her. -ASOS, Catelyn V
and while this is likely Jon, it is never actually confirmed what is in the will (not what this post is about). That said the following characters either fixed their seal or witnessed:
- Catelyn Stark
- Jason Mallister
- Galbart Glover
- GreatJon Umber
- Edmure Tully
- Maege Mormont
- Raynald Westerling
but since that was so cut and dry, lets look at each of the characters whereabouts and see who else they might have told about Robb's will (none of this is confirmed):
- Catelyn Stark is now the leader of the Brotherhood without Banners. Thus making it possible that the current members of the BWB and some smallfolk in the Riverlands know
- Jason Mallister is hostage at Seagard alongside his son Patrek
- Galbart Glover/Maege Mormont, one or both may have reached Howland Reed
- Edmure Tully may have told anyone in the Riverrun garrison (primarily Blackfish)
- GreatJon is a captive at the Twins (requested by the Iron Throne) the only person he may have told in the Twins dungeons is Marq Piper and thats still questionable
- Raynald Westerling was hit by a crossbow while trying to free Grey Wind and fell into the Green Fork
Jon's True Parentage
Unlike the unveiling of Robb's will, we don't know who all was around to witness this exactly, but we do get bits and pieces:
- Howland Reed
Why we haven't met him already:
We will meet Howland Reed, but not in the next book... he(Howland) knows just to much about the central mystery of the book... -SSM, Sentry Box Signing (Calgary, CA): 16 Nov 2000
- "They"
At least one other person in addition to Howland:
Ned remembered the way she had smiled then, how tightly her fingers had clutched his as she gave up her hold on life, the rose petals spilling from her palm, dead and black. After that he remembered nothing. They had found him still holding her body, silent with grief. The little crannogman, Howland Reed, had taken her hand from his. Ned could recall none of it. "I bring her flowers when I can," he said. "Lyanna was … fond of flowers." -AGOT, Eddard I
This could be anyone from a midwife, etc.
- Unconfirmed
While not confirmed anyone at Starfall may have seen Ned with Jon:
And they told how afterward Ned had carried Ser Arthur's sword back to the beautiful young sister who awaited him in a castle called Starfall on the shores of the Summer Sea.
Bloodraven could know as well:
"Once you have mastered your gifts, you may look where you will and see what the trees have seen, be it yesterday or last year or a thousand ages past. ... Nor will your sight be limited to your godswood. The singers carved eyes into their heart trees to awaken them, and those are the first eyes a new greenseer learns to use … but in time you will see well beyond the trees themselves." -ADWD, Bran III
And while this is very likely incorrect, Ned's soldiers seem to think that Jon was fathered by Ned on Ashara Dayne:
Ned would not speak of the mother, not so much as a word, but a castle has no secrets, and Catelyn heard her maids repeating tales they heard from the lips of her husband's soldiers.
This makes it seem like Ned did a good job of disguising his tracks, etc. from even his own men.
TLDR: Characters who witnessed Robb's will or Jon's true parentage.
