All time low?

12
thisisnotjr•

Wattage on the card? Also can the ram be upgraded?

MRAndy_MCOP•

RAM most certainly can and should be upgraded. Just stick a matching 8GB stick in it or get a 16gb kit and it's good to go.

Wattage is 75W on GPU so it's a little disappointing on that front, but imo still very nice for the price.

Thank you! Didn't realize I asked my question as a reply.

It looks like it is an all time low. It has been on sale a few times for $850, but this is the first time I have seen it below that.

I asked this question as a reply to a different question so I figured post his answer. Thanks OP!

75w 3060 is 20-25% slower than a 130w 3060 in 3d mark according to notebook check.net

A full power mobile 3050 would probably out perform it

MRAndy_MCOP•

This is distinctly incorrect. The average benchmark on userbenchmark for 3060 mobile for this particular laptop is 82% vs the average 3060 mobile for all laptops which is 88%. For comparison, the highest recorded benchmark for any 3050 mobile on userbenchmark is 65%. So in other words for this laptop, the average score for this 75W variant of the 3060 mobile is around 35% better performing than the best recorded 3050 mobile.

Dang I didn’t realize the mobile 3050 is so underpowered. I know max-P 3060’s compete with max-Q 3070’s, and same with 3070MaxP vs 3080MaxQ. I figured the same would apply to 3050’s but I guess not.

I have this laptop. I upgraded the RAM to 32gb and added a second m.e drive. I ran 3D Mark and got around 6500 on Time Spy and over 16,000 on Fire Strike.

I know this gets a lot of hate for the low wattage GPU, but considering ps5 supposedly gets 20,000 (and PS4 got a 5,000) on Fire Strike, I am perfectly happy with 16,000 for a laptop.

While I use my desktop gaming PC’s for VR, I tested it out on a few VR games wirelessly on the Quest 2, and it did fine.

How is the cooling and battery life when doing non gpu intensive activities?

2
Searexpro•

I generally keep it plugged in and use it with an external monitor most of the time, and when I take it with me on the go, I only use it for short spurts, so I have never used it for a full power cycle unplugged. With that said, it seems like the battery drains pretty quickly, so the battery life stinks. I would guess, when doing non- gaming activities, battery life lasts 60-80 minutes.

For cooling, I have the CPU slightly undervolted (prior to running benchmarks), and even when gaming, have never seen temps above 82 degrees.

I should also add, you can buy this from Best Buy via eBay and get 5% back via this eBay Bucks deal that ends tomorrow.

Total come to $799.99 - $40 = $759.99 + tax

Don't necessarily need a laptop, but this seems like a solid deal for the price. Chief?

Hi, Chief here. Don’t buy this. Just don’t do it.

Go look up other MSI laptops. This exact Chassis is used for basic crappy GTX 1650 laptops. That GTX 1650 version was Walmart’s $500 Black Friday laptop special. Does that inspire confidence? It shouldn’t.

Everything that can be made cheaply here is made cheaply. Screen is trash. Build quality is bad. It’s ugly as hell. You need another 8gb of Ram so you have to tear it apart right away. While there, throw out the wifi card and replace it because that is trash.

Once you factor in the wifi card and Ram that’s at least another $30-50 to the cost.

75 watt GPU. Yeah you can vbios flash it to more, but hey risk is yours on that.

Personally, I have this laptop. Bought it for $850 in November. It mines ethereum that’s all it does. I vbios flashed a 130w vbios to it and it gets 45 MH/S. Wouldn’t ever consider using it as an actual laptop, but hey cost wise a GPU with that hash rate would’ve been comparable at the time in price. I figured it’d be easier to sell a crappy laptop than a GPU down the road.

Just bought this from bestbuy didnt throw in another 8gb ram kit as store was oos. I bought it thinking "what the hell a 3060? even at low tdp its better then anything else" I ran heaven on extreme and got a score of 2938(or 2918 dont fully remember anymore since its been a hour or two since I had to restore it since i decided to return it) saw that it was basically constantly using half memory which I thought was a bit odd but I do understand os uses ram so I disregarded it.

In terms of color for some odd reason the reds look more orange then red and the sound is pretty subpar but the build quality is alright for the price but anything more and its confusing why the bottom panel is plaster and everything else is aluminum. keyboard is a bit oversized to the point of being clunky but all of those things arent really a issue just minor inconviences.

The true issue at hand is the fact that just downloading a game it overheated. Like hot to the touch on the number keys fans raring. Now I did have settings on performance, but I was just downloading fortnite(as its a pretty easy in between benchmark for me to use)

The performance for fortnite was absolutely abysmal for the game i could barely maintain 60 fps and had constant fps drops even at that low sometimes the game would even sort of freeze up.(settings were optomized but I had tried both all epic which was defaulted to and high/custom) I had a dell g5155 that I sold with a 3050 that literally performed more stable then this. The disk drive is terrible as well and even restoring the thing to return took me about a hour and a half or longer.

I might be a bit of a snob because I have a nice desktop but it wasnt worth it for me id rather save up the money and run a nice 3070 laptop for twice the price. There are somethings I can settle on but unstable fps and overheating isnt one of them. Could of gotten a bad one but thats my take on it.

How is performance on this (75W) compared to full-blown wattage on the 3060m's?

Also, how the temps and heat on this one?

1
Greglegman•

I can't speak to this particular config, but I had a 2070 GF65 thin and its thermals were horrible, as was the quality of the case and the fans. Sold it to someone and can't be happier to not have it any longer. The specs punch above its price point, but corners are cut everywhere else.

4
MRAndy_MCOP•

On userbenchmark, the average score for this particular variant (75W) is only about 7% lower than the average score for all 3060 mobile variants.

2
fedlol•

Notebookcheck did a test and found the difference in performance between 75w and 130w to be about 25% at most in 3D Mark.

Picking this up for Elden Ring and had a question. The TGP for the 3060 is 75w. Is there a way to reduce it to maybe 50w max to reduce the heat and fan speed? I don’t need much performance, just more than the 5700G I’m using now.

1

I've seen a lot of people using ThrottleStop software to stop the cpu from boosting and then undervolting a little bit to keep the heat down so they can still game with 3000 rpm fan speed. Still need to do this to the one I picked up a few week ago when it was on sale for $850.

I've got a Victus with an i5 and 3050. Seeing this is only 50 USD more, is it worth swapping it out for this Laptop? I have the protection plan with best buy, so I would just have to pay the difference and get anoth plan for this.

How does this compare to the GF66 microcenter deal?
