Joey Chang’s
6 Rangoon for $6.50
Filling - 8/10
Wrapper - 7/10
Sauce - 9/10
Value - 4/5
Overall - 28/35
Filling: This is a very tasty filling! The garlic flavor is strong, and the texture is nice and creamy. There is also a light seafood flavor which is pretty rare. For being called ‘crab rangoon’, the flavor of crab is often absent. I can really taste it in these which is a huge bonus. Overall, an excellent savory filling that is really elevated by the crab flavor.
Wrapper: Y’all know I love the butterfly wrapping technique! This wrapping method is far superior to the triangle method. This shape allows for a full pocket of filling making for an excellent wrapper to filling ratio. The wonton was also incredibly light and crisp. My only complaint would be that the flavor of the wonton is bland, but in its defense, 95% of rangoon have bland wrappers. It’s rare to find one that adds an actual flavor element. The texture, however, was fabulous and really added to the flavor of the filling.
Sauce: This sauce is outstanding. It’s almost like a cross between a sweet and a sour and a sweet chili sauce and the two marry very well. There is a light sweetness to the sauce that isn’t overwhelming, and it lends itself very well to the heavy savoriness of the filling. There is also a hint of chili, and while it doesn’t have the spice element, it does have that excellent chili flavor. This sauce is stunning as a standalone, but even better when paired with the rangoon. I would call it a triumph if I didn’t want to risk sounding dramatic; it really is that good.
Value: Excellent bang for your buck. The 6 rangoon bundles usually cost over 7 dollars, so getting these for just over a dollar apiece is a steal. I will note that there is a slight discrepancy - their menu says it is $5.95 for 6 which would have given them likely a 4.5/5 rating instead of a 4. Still a good price regardless, but my rating reflects what I paid.
Overall: These are some damn tasty rangoon! The price is right, the filling is truly a ‘crab’ rangoon, the sauce pairs perfectly with them, and the wonton compliments all of the other elements. I would very highly recommend these; they are some of the finest I have had in the city so far. The sauce alone is worth the visit; it’s so good I can (and did) eat it with a spoon. An excellent choice if you’re in the mood for some rangoon.
