So is it easy to kill a Ghost, or not?

Question

Do we need a special devourer bullet to kill Sundance? Or can we just crush them with our hands?

It's been inconsistent over the years of the franchise. Back in D1 you have stuff like a grimoire card showing a captain cutting a Ghost in half with a plain old shockblade. Then in D2 you have Drifter saying Scorn guns can't kill a Ghost.

IIRC one of the writers posted a Tweet once saying that their impression was that it takes either overwhelming force like an orbital bombardment or paracausal power to destroy a Ghost normally, but in Darkness Zones they're much more vulnerable.

Guardians have paracausally-enhanced strength so I think that's what explains crushing one in your fist.

I think this is one of the clearer examples of the consequences of Destiny's writing team being a revolving door. There have been so many lead writers and narrative leads over the years, with the entire team being in constant flux, that little inconsistencies like this pop up from time to time.

not to mention the lore tab of the one eyed mask. in which a cabal legionary just crushes a ghost in their hand

That was while the Traveler was caged so the usual rules were not applicable.

Plenty of random and perfectly mundane (or, at least, non-paracausal) stuff has killed Ghosts over the years.

The devourer bullet used on Sundance was massive overkill - the other plan the Barons had was to just shoot Cayde with it, but Sundance presented herself as an easier target.

Does the devourer bullet Perma-kill Cayde regardless of Sundance’s status?

It's possible. Dredgen Yor perma-killed several Guardians in the Crucible using the original Thorn. He notably also perma-killed Jaren Ward without killing his Ghost. I don't think it would have been a guaranteed kill though, which is why the Rifleman took out Sundance when she presented herself as a target.

Devourer bullets basically stop the victim from being revived, even if the ghost survives

That's the idea.

Wouldn't say easier, the rifleman just prefer to take out ghosts as that's something they are known for.

But yh you are completely right about non paracausual stuff killing ghosts it takes some more work but definitely not impossible. Some guardians and their got killed by friendly artillery blasts from the awoken, by mistake since they were unaware it would kill them.

it doesn't take anything special, that's why so many died at twilight gap. the bullet was intended to kill cayde whether sundance was alive or not, the rifleman just wanted to flex when she was pulled out and make him suffer. cayde wasn't making it out of that prison.

So why did the Drifter say Scorn guns can’t kill Ghosts a few years back?

4

It’s because scorn guns are basically just trash thrown together into something that vaguely works as a gun

Ludonarrative dissonance. I can avoid fallen and give gunfire no problem but the scorn just wreck me sometimes.

I think any significant amount of force can destroy a ghost. If we look at Ada-1, she killed two ghosts (and their guardians) each with a single bullet from Izanagi's Burden, a regular old sniper rifle that has no paracausal force about it.

Now that I think about it, I'm kind of annoyed that we can't kill ghosts with Izanagi's.
