The Female Line of House Blackfyre (Spoilers Extended)
House Blackfyre: The Female Line
One of my favorite things in Blackfyre lore is how GRRM goes out of his way (more than once) to mention that the Blackfyre male line is extinct. With that in mind I thought it would be interesting to look at the few things we know about about the female line of House Blackfyre and try and looking at some events, etc. that could help infer ideas/theorize.
Background
GRRM mentions how the male line is extinct in TWOIAF/ADWD:
Daemon Blackfyre's surviving sons fled to Tyrosh, their mother's home, and with them went Bittersteel. The realm would continue to be troubled by the claims of the Blackfyre Pretenders for four more generations, until the last of the descendants of Daemon Blackfyre through the male line was sent to the grave. - TWOIAF, The Targaryen Kings: Daeron II
and:
"I admire your powers of persuasion," Tyrion told Illyrio. "How did you convince the Golden Company to take up the cause of our sweet queen when they have spent so much of their history fighting against the Targaryens?"
Illyrio brushed away the objection as if it were a fly. "Black or red, a dragon is still a dragon. When Maelys the Monstrous died upon the Stepstones, it was the end of the male line of House Blackfyre." The cheesemonger smiled through his forked beard. "And Daenerys will give the exiles what Bittersteel and the Blackfyres never could. She will take them home." -ADWD, Tyrion II
and to a lesser extent this line about Daemon II:
Daemon has four younger brothers, and sisters as well. Should I be so foolish as to remove his pretty head, his mother will mourn, his friends will curse me for a kinslayer, and Bittersteel will crown his brother Haegon.
Facts on the Female Line
Daemon I Blackfyre (aka The King who bore the Sword) had seven sons. But he also had at least two daughters. Some time before the First Blackfyre Rebellion, Daemon agreed to wed his eldest daughter Calla to Aegon "Bittersteel" Rivers (his half brother):
Whatever the case may be, Aegor Rivers soon began to press Daemon Blackfyre to proclaim for the throne, and all the more so after Daemon agreed to wed his eldest daughter, Calla, to Aegor. Bitter his steel may have been, but worse was his tongue. He spilled poison in Daemon's ear, and with him came the clamoring of other knights and lords with grievances. -TQWOIAF, The Targaryen Kings: Daeron II
That's it. That is all we know confirmed about the female line of House Blackfyre:
- Daemon had at least two (since Calla was his eldest) daughters
- Calla was promised/betrothed to Bittersteel
- The female line was not extinct as of 260 AC when Maelys died on the Stepstones.
Tyrosh
Daemon's wife was Rohanne of Tyrosh, thus making the free city of Tyrosh a likely home/base for House Blackfyre (if interested: Tyrosh: A Safe Haven for the Black Dragon) during their invasions. I would assume the women of House Blackfyre (unless we find out about some warrior women) stayed in Tyrosh at this time.
And while no guarantee that he is indeed a Blackfyre, Young Griff does note:
"My mother was a lady of Tyrosh. I dye my hair in memory of her." -ADWD, Tyrion V
Bloodline
While Dany traces her Valyrian blood back to Daeron (son of the Unworthy and Naerys), Daemon is the son of the Unworthy and Daena the Defiant.
If you want you can check the wiki to see the House Blackfyre Family Tree
While we can't assume 100% that it ended up happening, I think the most logical answer is that the female line continued through Calla/Bittersteel (keep in mind Bittersteel is half Targ)
Unknown Daemon
We know that Maelys the Monstrous killed his cousin Daemon in a fight for control of the Golden Company:
MAELYS BLACKFYRE, THE MONSTROUS: Captain of the Golden Company, named for his grotesquely huge torso and arms, fearsome strength, and savage nature. A second head grew from his neck, no bigger than a fist. He won command of the Golden Company by fighting his cousin, Daemon Blackfyre, for it, killing his cousin's destrier with a single punch and then twisting Daemon's head until it was torn from his shoulders.
So we have two members of House Blackfyre that are "unplaced" in the family tree (Daemon/Maelys). Since we know Maelys was from the male line (see above), and that they are cousins, and due to the relative youth/small size of House Blackfyre, it is possible that Daemon was of the female line.
Which would make sense seeing that he would likely have to defeat a son/descendant of Bittersteel in order to gain full control of the Golden Company.
It would also make sense that Maelys would then go and sack Tyrosh (Blackfyre safe haven) if there were surviving members of the other line there. If interested: Tyrosh, House Blackfyre & The War of the Ninepenny Kings
Maegor Targaryen
Son of Aerion Brightflame. He disappears from history after being passed over at the Great Council of 233. That said, recent comments by Elio Garcia have me really interested in Maegor's potential return to the storyline.
A very common theory about this is the Brightfyre Theory which involves Maegor Targaryen potentially marrying into the female line.
Other Characters w/Valyrian Blood
There are plenty of characters still alive who have valyrian blood, but looking at the timeline (Calla/Bittersteel), and the numerous character who are theorized to be their descendants (Illyrio, Serra, Varys, Young Griff, etc.) it is also possible that a descendant of Aerion (bastard in Lys) or one of the other numerous potential descendants (Saera) or bloodlines (valyrian blood runs strong in Lys/Volantis, etc.)
If you like Blackfyre posts here is my most recent one: Anything/Everything Daemon III Blackfyre Just ask if you want more otherwise this post would have just been covered in Blackfyre links.
TLDR: The female line of House Blackfyre didn't end in 260 AC and survived through Calla Blackfyre (or less likely from the at least one other sister she had). Calla was promised to Bittersteel and if this marriage took place likely led to a female line that had at least one potential member (Daemon) who was killed by Maelys. There are numerous potential marriage candidates they could have looked to in order to "keep the bloodline strong".
