This could have a consequence in the Arctic, which Russia also has territory in, quite close to us. True, most cargo vessels aren't flagged by Russia, but the Russian Navy patrols the Arctic quite a bit. If Canada is going to monitor the area a lot more closely, we could see a confrontation up there at some point. I absolutely agree we need to protect the North however.

The number of ships actually registered and flagged as Russian would be very small. Still, it's a symbolic move.
Same with the oil. It's just a blanket ban. It sends a message, however small, and it shuts down any argument the opposition might have about Trudeau being too soft on Russia.
We should have done this when they invaded Crimea.
Or Georgia. Take it up with Harper I guess. He was at the post for both of those.
I feel like the whole world was very Chamberlainy at that time. No one wanted to upset the post-Cold War order and just kind of hoped Putin would stop after a while. I'm certainly no fan of Harper, but he wouldn't have had the united front that we have today.
Because it doesn't matter to us, we can go first and take that heat and open the way for other countries to take action that's more meaningful. That's frequently why we take a leading role within the alliance system when dealing with Russia. We both aren't America and aren't easy to threaten.
Even if every nation in the world did it minus Liberia and Panama is would mean little. Until one or both of those nations shut down access to Russian ports little happens.
Still, it's not a bad gesture.
The Northeast passage is getting warm enough for traffic during the summer months. The problem is that Russia and Canada both have claims on it as territorial waters.
This ban includes Russian owned ships not only Russian flagged
This also includes Russian-owned ships. Nearly all ships in the world are not flagged as their actual nationality so it would be pointless to ban only Russian flagged ones
