Daruma Japanese Steakhouse

5 rangoon for $7.95

Filling: 7/10

Wrapper: 9/10

Sauce: 8/10

Value: 3/5

Total: 27/35

Filling: When eaten alongside the sauce, this filling is very good. It’s got a good strong garlic flavor, and the green onions in it are a nice addition I don’t always see. However, when eaten alone, the filling is a little bland. It’s very creamy and the texture is excellent, but the flavor is just savory and doesn’t offer any other flavor notes. I will say that the green onion gives it a bit of uniqueness, but overall, it’s a good filling but isn’t wow-ing me.

Wrapper: It’s rare that the wonton is my favorite part of the rangoon, but these really deliver. They’re in the excellent butterfly wrapping style which makes for a great filling to wrapper ratio, but they go further than that. There is something almost sweet about the wrapper which pairs beautifully with the savory filling and the spicy sauce. They’re also thick, which I don’t generally enjoy, but when the wrapper is this crispy and delicious, I want as much of it as I can get.

Sauce: This sauce is a classic chili sauce which isn’t usually my favorite, but it pairs incredibly well with this rangoon. The sweet wrapper marries perfectly with the spice in the sauce. While it isn’t spicy in the 'burn your tongue' sense, the flavor of spice is strong and it’s a great compliment to the slightly bland filling. I wouldn’t like the sauce as well as I do if it was paired with a different rangoon, but in this context, it’s very well done.

Value: These are not cheap rangoon. At over a dollar fifty per piece, these are quite pricy, especially when you take into account that they’re located in Hilliard which tends to be a more affordable area than where some of the other rangoon are located.

Overall: I think these rangoon are incredibly well balanced. The filling is savory, the wrapper sweet, the sauce spicy. The flavor differences really make it stand out. Often, I taste rangoon that are savory filling, savory sauce, bland wonton, and while they are enjoyable enough to eat, they don’t offer anything unique. Daruma has a really interesting rangoon that I think is absolutely worth trying. They lose some points for being expensive and for a filling that is a bit lackluster, but overall, still very solid.
