Best Crab Rangoon in Columbus #8

Hello, and welcome back to 'Toastmuncher Tuesdays', where I rate and review crab rangoon across Columbus. This week, I took the recommendation of u/kay-rach and u/Rabbit_in_the_Moon and headed up to Polaris to get my hands on some Molly Woo's rangoon.

NOTE: I want to mention my 'Value' category briefly. I want this series to highlight the best all around rangoon - including price. However, for me personally, price is not as important as flavor, hence why that category is only worth 5 points and the others are worth 10. My best advice is that if you want the best rangoon regardless of price, just look at my top ones and factor out the price category. Hope this series allows people of all budgets to get good 'goons!

As always, link to all of my previous reviews can be found here.

Molly Woo’s

6 rangoon for $11.29

Filling: 9/10

Wrapper: 9/10

Sauce: 8.5/10

Value: 2/5

Total: 28.5/35

Filling: This was a CRAB rangoon. I thought Joey Chang’s had a good crab flavor, but it was nothing compared to these. As I have said before, it’s rare that a crab rangoon actually tastes like crab, but these absolutely do. They also have a strong green onion flavor that pairs excellently and feels like a classic seafood dish I would get on the coast. The filling was decadent and had a silky texture that I loved. My only critique would be that I craved a bit more salt in the filling, but that’s really only because I am nit-picking. Overall, a stellar filling.

Wrapper: These rangoon were wrapped in the butterfly method which I always enjoy. The filling to wonton ratio was excellent. I thought the wonton was very light and they were perfectly cooked - crispy without being overcooked. They almost melted in my mouth which I didn’t think was possible for a wonton to do. A wonderful vessel to carry the filling.

Sauce: Where the filling was a bit lacking in the salt department, the sauce supplemented it very well. Rather than the sauce and the filling being two separate elements, they were tailored to each other and worked in tandem to create the best bite possible. This was a sweet chili sauce, and I really appreciated that the sauce went beyond just the chili flavor and actually had a bit of heat. There were also underlying tropical notes to the sauce. I could taste just a hint of pineapple at the end and it went wonderfully with the delightful crab filling.

Value: This is where these rangoon lose points. Almost $2 per rangoon is expensive no matter which way you cut it. They’re excellent, and I can tell they were made with more costly ingredients, but they are still very expensive.

Overall: If money is no object, these are the rangoon for you. They have a superb crab flavor that is unlike any filling I have tasted before. The sauce works wonderfully with the filling and the light wonton wraps it all up in a clean crisp bite. These rangoon are very unique in how strong the crab flavor is. If you’re a seafood lover, you will adore these, however those who prefer the more standard rangoon and don’t like a strong crab taste will probably want to steer clear. Overall, an excellent rangoon (one of the best I have ever had), but maybe not for everyone because of the crab flavor and high cost.
