Turning Vans into swing shoes

I’m sure something similar is asked all the time, but I’m looking to convert a pair of shoes I own into swing dancing shoes. The thing is, I would still like to wear them sometimes as street dancing shoes, so I can’t exactly put suede on them. I want to sand down the sole as much as possible, but I don’t know if I can completely sand it down. Does anyone have experience putting something like rubber cement on the sole of a shoe and then sanding that? I want a smooth piece of rubber, something that would be a lot like a hard leather sole.
