What did happen to the Italian monarchs after unification?

After the German unification the new state became a federal state. Most houses remained on their thrones and could do a lot without consulting the new government in Berlin. But what did happen to the Italian monarchs? Italy was in a similar fragmented state as Germany. Did Italy also preserve the other monarchs? Was Italy a federal state like Germany? If not, why did Germany preserve their monarchs but Italy not?
