Railway crossing accident

Seems like someone just got hit at the Heildelberg/Grange rd level crossing. Police and ambulance arrived about 10 minutes ago. Anyone know exactly what happened? It's too far for me too see

Related: the boom gates at Glenhuntly were broken this morning. Caused about 50minutes of delays.

The sooner all level crossings are removed the better.

I really don't understand people who don't look left/right when crossing ANYTHING. Even an open level crossing; why would you not do that? Christ, when I cross the road on a green-man, I still look both ways.

EDIT: Sorry what I forgot to say was that I believe the driver is at fault, not the crossing. If the driver looked, this may not have happened. EDIT2: Same goes for peds.

Even careful people will occasionally make a mistake. Level crossings make those mistakes much more deadly.

Well yes, this is true for all things. People crash at intersections or roundabouts all the time due to not being vigilant enough - even I've almost caused a couple of accidents, but purely through my own fault and I appreciate that car accidents are usually less deadly.

I think blaming the level crossing is deferring the blame really. In reality it's a very simple thing to negotiate - stop when lights flash, and look before crossing; no more difficult than a roundabout (easier really).

When you drive a car or any other vehicle, you're taking a risk. It's in your power as the driver to minimize the risk my being cautious - you cannot rely on anyone else to save your neck.

All you can do is follow the rules and look out for yourself. If you fail to do that, you may pay with your life.

Sounds harsh I guess - good debate though!

People make mistakes. The trick is to improve the world to a point so they have a chance to learn from them.

That's the one with the tram square isn't it? Good luck getting it replaced; as far as I can tell, it's significantly more expensive than a normal grade separation.

Fuck those boom gates. Totally ridiculous for cars, bikes, trams and peds.

I was on the train that got held up immediately behind the accident. Driver was able to stop at Fairfield station, which would not have been stopped at normally on this express train. After 20min he told us not to bother waiting any longer as the incident was serious. Traffic was chaos on the roads, the cars were running across the barriers by that time.

Some trains terminating at Clifton Hill.

This was bound to happen.

A right hand turn just after a level crossing on such a busy rd is not a good idea.

Funny thing is, going the other way you can't turn right before the crossing.

(Hope no-one was injured)

Major Delays - Hurstbridge line: outbound (train struck car near Alphington). Major delays over 30 minutes.
