I've scoured the internet and can't find the answer. Apparently there's supposed to be an 'add socket' option in this context menu. I tried using both a static mesh and skeletal cube mesh but the option isn't there.

The idea is to have a socket in the center of each side of the cube so I can connect cubes together for a Scrap Mechanic / Space Engineers style game. I've already figured out how to line trace to figure out which face the crosshair is aimed at.

Or, if this is the totally wrong way of going about this, I would really love some input on a more efficient way! I think the aforementioned games use voxels for the vehicles but I don't think I want to get into voxels yet.

A vehicle-building physics simulator might be a lofty goal for a beginner in 3D development, but I've been doing 2D games since I was young and I am extremely inspired to learn by the ideas I have for this project!

Don't have UE in front of me, but from what I recall, open up the skeleton asset and you should see the bone hierarchy on the left. Right click the bone you want the socket to attach to and there should be an option to add socket.

Other option is in your actor asset just add a scene component and attach to component the cubes to that scene component in your blueprint.

Thanks for the response! Forgive me for being such a noob but I can't figure out how to see the bones in the skeletal mesh. If I open the actor blueprint, I see the skeletal mesh but no bones! Everyone says this is done in the same way as UE4, by opening a socket editor by going into the Window menu at the top of the screen, but of course it isn't there.

It's not there because you're not in the skeleton. You're in the actor. The actor has components. Of which one is a skeletal mesh component. That component points to a skeleton. In that skeleton is where you add sockets.

See on the right details panal it says Mesh header, and then Skeletal Mesh with the box and a folder with a magnifying glass? You have to go into that asset and add the socket there.

THANK YOU

I couldn't find that information anywhere, and wouldn't have thought to
try to open something I thought was just a slot for a mesh!
