Best Crab Rangoon in Columbus #10

Welcome back to 'Toastmuncher Tuesdays'! You know the drill - I eat and review crab rangoon across the city. Map of everywhere I have tried with color coded categories is here. Full data sheet is here. Link to the hub where I keep all reviews is here.

This week, I took u/alakazam318 's recommendation and braved OSU street parking to check out Moy's. Please enjoy!

Moy’s on High

6 rangoon for $8.95

Filling: 7/10

Wrapper: 9.5/10

Sauce: 6/10

Value: 3/5

Overall: 25.5/35

Filling: Moy’s has a nice, solid filling. They’re not reinventing the wheel, but they’re making sure it’s one hell of a wheel. The texture was stellar - a perfect creamy bite that’s complemented incredibly well by the wonton. There is a great onion flavor that doesn’t overpower the 'goon like some others have. Garlicky, oniony, everything I look for in a good ‘goon. I wish it had a stronger crab flavor, but that’s not a deal breaker. Overall, it’s nothing unique, but it’s tasty and checks all of the boxes.

Wrapper: This wrapper!! It’s the bundle method perfected. My main complaint with the traditional bundle method (see my Sushi King review for reference) is that the tops of the bundle can be spiky and somewhat inconvenient to eat. This rangoon has everything that I love about the bundle method (ideal filling to wonton ration, generous amounts of filling) without the downfall of the spiky top. Every bite I took was perfectly complimented by a thin, crispy bite of wonton that seemed to almost layer the filling. This wrapper was perfectly cooked, incredibly light and crisp. A damn near perfect wrapper. Trying these has resulted in my changing the wrapper score for Sushi King’s to a 9 instead of a 9.5 because I have seen what a true 9.5 is, and it’s these.

Sauce: The sauce was the weak point of this rangoon for me. It tasted fine on its own; I actually really enjoyed it. The sauce was a classic sweet rangoon sauce with hints of tropical flavors. That being said, I don’t think it went as well with the rangoon as it could have. My favorite sauces are ones that bring something to the mix that the filling was lacking - a sweet filling with a spicy sauce for example. The filling was fairly standard, tasty, but standard. I wish the sauce had gone for something a bit more unique to better compliment the rangoon. Overall, I enjoyed the sauce, but it’s going to lose some points for not being a better compliment to the ‘goons.

Price: At $1.49 each, these get a 3 for value. Metrics can be found on my data sheet linked above.

Overall: These are very good crab rangoon, and if I hadn’t tried as many as I have, I would be inclined to say they’re almost perfect. The wonton is fantastic, and the filling very tasty. The sauce is a bit boring, but nothing to turn your nose up at. All in all, my main complaint is that Moy’s rangoon are lacking that special something that sets the very best apart. They were pretty standard in all aspects. That being said, though, they were quite tasty, and I would get them again.
