Mrs. Chamberlain’s Intentions

Spoiler

Apologies if this has already been discussed. This is my first time on this sub; I tried to do my due diligence and did not see it talked about here at length.

There are spoilers in this post, FYI.

I wanted to gauge people’s impressions on Mrs. Chamberlain’s reactions to Aurora Fane’s statements during the finale. Aurora implores Mrs. Chamberlain to keep this whole affair between Marian and Mr. Raikes a secret in order to protect Marian’s reputation.

At that moment, the camera cuts to Mrs. Chamberlain and there is a sudden, strange note in the score… rather like a horror movie zinger that seemed almost out of place in this show. Mrs. Chamberlain then tells Mrs. Fane that she can keep a secret. The camera lingers on Mrs. Chamberlain as Mrs. Fane leaves. This was pretty conspicuous.

Did anyone notice this? It was one of the stranger aspects of the finale for me. Not a bad thing—just very noteworthy.

Does anyone have any sense of what her intentions are? Interestingly, Mrs. Chamberlain has long been one of the characters that I’ve thought relatively more trustworthy than the rest. Something about living honestly and with dignity even if that meant ostracism by “polite” society resonates with me.

But what is everyone’s take on this moment? It seems now Mrs. Chamberlain has some leverage against Aurora, Marian, Mr. Raikes, and maybe Ada. I would be a bit disappointed if she used this info to her advantage since it would implicate Marian, I tend to view Mrs. Chamberlains interactions with Marian as sincere. Their relationship is one of my favorites in the show.
