Melee sorcery?

How viable are the closer ranged melee sorceries? After I beat Malenia I want to mix it up a little but I dont really want to go full blown sit really far back and one shot bosses kinda sorceries, I still want to be up close and dodging stuff. Are the sword sorceries any good?
