Where should I go to retrieve deceased Romanian grandfather’s passport?

Discuție

Hello there,

I’m trying to retrieve records of my Romanian grandfather’s passport and/or ID card. Unfortunately, I don’t speak Romanian so I’m having trouble finding out where I would request this.

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

Directia Generala de Pasapoarte in Bucharest. Public relations office. You have to bring his death certificate with you. Apparently you can also mail them, but if you are not from Romania this might be very complicated, or you might be able to do it through a legal representative.

do you have his birth certificate? If not, you should start with that at the town hall where he was born. And if the town hall isn't in today's Romanian territories, well, the fun times are just getting started for you

I have a church birth document, plus his death and marriage certificates. I hope this is enough!

what year was your grandfather born?

looking over your post history, I see that your grandparents moved to the US in the 1940s 1950s. Then got american citizenship. That means that they had to give up their german/romanian citizenships. Things get more complicated from here. Hire a lawyer and move on from there

My grandfather never acquired U.S. citizenship, although my grandmother naturalized and lost her German citizenship.

I intend to hire a lawyer, but I hope to save money by doing as many steps as I can myself haha.

There's a chance he didn't own a passport, in which case you should also look into contacting Directorate for Persons Record - they are the ones issuing standard IDs for all RO citizens.

If they ask for absurd bureaucratic things like you going to them in person (welcome to Romania!), you can contact a small lawyer or notary office to delegate someone to represent you legally.

Thank you, I’ll try this!

There is a company that i worked for in the past that does this kind of job, for a fee ofc, helping people with the citizeships for relatives who were forced to renounced it, and regain citizenship for living relatives. If you dont find it the easy way, go trough religious way, find were was he born(county, village)what religion he had and ask them(the church) they usualy have records from the years 1800 and up. One problem you will have is maybe the name, if the name changed( from Jhon to john example) when he was registerd is very common, thats why you need to find his parents certificates. A lawyer or a paralegal can help you, it is very hard to do it on you own. At least find someone who can adivse you and do It yourself.

Later edit: i see in comments that you have the church certificate, You can hire people with power of attorney act so they can do it for you.

Honestly, I think you will never get ID or pass, these are documents that the state will recover during the process of issuing the death certificate....

If he was buried with it, the cemetery.
