Incessant clicking noise from computer, sounds like a pen.

Closed

Hey all, hopefully someone is able to figure this out for me cause I'm at my wits end with trying to fix this.

I have an NZXT computer that's about 3 years old now. Ever since I got it it has been making a clicking noise with seemingly no pattern or reason. This isn't a ticking noise or anything. It sounds like the noise you get when you click a pen if I were to describe it as accurately as possible.

The rub is this, I am 99% sure that there was a setting that I checked/turned on when I first set up the computer that had to do with this clicking sound. I distinctly remember telling myself that I could turn it off if I found it annoying. Needless to say I've totally forgotten at this point.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

eta:

Ahh I forgot something probably important, it coincides with the white light on the top of the case. The clicking always happens when the white light flashes.

Is there any chance that something has become stuck in the fan or is brushing against it? Cable debris etc?

Does your computer have a hard drive or solid state drive? If you have a hard drive, it's possible the noise is coming from that.

Like the other commenter mentioned, you could check the fans and make sure nothing is hitting them.

If it happens with enough frequency, you could take off the case side panel and try to see where it is coming from to find the culprit.

It's not anything to do with the fans cause I've inspected/cleaned them multiple times at this point.

I suppose it's possible it's the hard drives (there's 2 of them and 2 clicks).

If that's the case then I wonder what it could be. Like I said it's been doing this since day 1, I can't imagine it's the hard drives failing, I haven't had a single issue on that front thus far.

Aight I find this post of the same exact HDD that I have. Maybe this mf is just loud as shit normally? Again, been like this as long as I can remember and no issues doing computer stuff in all this time.

Sorry to keep replying to you btw lol.

here's another one

The light comes on when the disk is reading/writing, which is when it would be moving, so that makes sense. It sounds like it is just a loud hard drive. You can check the status of your HD with seagates proprietary tool here: https://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

You can also trying making sure the hard disk never goes to sleep. To do that go follow these steps:

press Win+X -> Select "Power Options" -> Click "Additional power settings" towards the bottom -> click "Change plan settings" on which ever plan you are using -> click "Change advanced power settings" -> go to the "Hard disk" section -> "Turn off hard disk after" -> set it to 0 minutes if it isn't already set to 0.

Of course if that setting is already enabled, then obviously it isn't going to fix it. But you can check to see if it isn't set and if that helps.

Thanks so much for the response. I actually did basically that same thing in the AAM/APM setting on CrystalDiskInfo. I just set it to max efficiency and it hasn't been clicking since.

I went ahead and changed the setting you mentioned while I was at though.
