Scotiabank Arena in Toronto being evacuated slowly as possible fire in suspended speaker array. Raptors game called.

Scotiabank Arena in Toronto being evacuated slowly as possible fire in speaker array in catwalk array. Possibly a light hanging close to array but seems like “electrical fire” in the speaker. Apparently fire crew will descend into the area from above and they’re worried about fans below even if the sections below all cleared for last 10-15 minutes while game went on. Just posting for you pros in case any comments or insights. Apparently just a faint smell in the building but worries include speaker fall and need for staff to work in the air/catwalks. Unfortunate. Game was great! Apparently some fan video of sparks/fire from speaker.

My band doesn’t even carry a fire extinguisher with us when we play. Maybe we should.

I would hope most venues have fire extinguishers, or sprinkler systems, etc.

I hope most venues have two working DIs but that's apparently a hard ask sometimes

True, true

Hope? Isn't that a requirement in the U.S. as well? Here in Germany it definitely is, there's a whole section of the construction law regarding event locations in all different types and forms.

Same in the US but people who run venues, especially smaller ones, tend to bend the rules when money is tight.

I did a show once where I held lead fire extinguisher.

Was watching the game when it happened , the fire was actually burning from the left side of the cabinet.

Someone has video. Can anyone identify the speaker? Pardon my ignorance, but would they be amplified or would the amps be elsewhere?!?

From other pics, it’s a JBL, and would likely not be self powered

If its a passive cab, the amp could of overloaded it or sent out DC voltage, blowing the tweeter. If it's active, then might of been Power supply, internal fuse blown, heatsink over heating, internal thermal sensor failure, fan failure. Or simply over powered driver and the voice coil went pop. A high power stage light might of been too close or focused onto the speaker.

Who knows, theres many things that could of caused it!

I would think that it was either an active speaker that went pop, or there was a light or something to close to it. I've never seen a voice coil cause an actual fire, they tend to go because they're mechanically overstretched. Or occasionally melt but I've never seen actual flames

I’m leaning ferrofluid dryed or leaked out. Voicecoil overheated and caught the cone.

Jbl is the speaker, and they actually have a service bulletin to replace the ferrofluid in some models. Always thought that was crazy, maybe not

If the amp is fine then that means probably checking and/or servicing every speaker in the place? Wow… that’ll be a job and a half.

Do you have a date for that service bulletin? For my own curiosity.

Late teens? I remember it maybe five or so years ago?
