Let's get down to business! This week, I took u/Wondeful 's recommendation and headed over to New Asian Wok on Sullivant. Enjoy!

New Asian Wok

6 ‘goons for $5.50

Filling: 6.5/10

Wrapper: 6/10

Sauce: 7/10

Value: 5/5

Overall: 24.5/35

Filling: There wasn’t anything super unique about this filling, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it. The flavors were light and nuanced. The filling is sweeter than the average ‘goon without making ‘sweet’ its main focus. I liked the hints of garlic as well. The filling was a satisfactory portion, however, as I have said before, I think the triangle folding method naturally makes for less filling. I loved the texture, it was incredibly creamy and delicate. Overall, the filling is solid, but it leaves me wanting a little something more in terms of uniqueness.

Wrapper: Triangle wrapper, the bane of my existence. As far as triangle wrappers go, though, this one was one of the better ones. Although I think a different wrapping method would have been better, I did really enjoy the flavor of the wrapper. It was a crispy finish without being too oily. They managed to pack more filling in it than I expected, so overall, a solid wrapper.

Sauce: This was an intriguing sauce. It was very thick, thicker than any other rangoon sauce I have tried. While I was initially skeptical, I found I really enjoyed it. It was a rare sweet and sour sauce where I can really taste the sour. Generally, ‘sweet and sour’ just means ‘sweet’. I appreciated that I was able to taste sour elements in this sauce as well. The thickness coated the rangoon beautifully and made for a great filling to sauce ratio.

Value: These are the first rangoon I have ranked that received a full 5/5 on the value category. Anything under $1 each gets full credit.

Overall: Although each element of the ‘goons are not super unique, I’m giving these a good score because of the overall bite. I thought the sauce did a great job bringing out the best in the filling. The filling’s garlic notes, while somewhat muted alone, really shone when paired with the thick sauce. The sweetness of the sauce and excellent savory flavor of the filling tasted great when paired together. I think the filling could have benefited from a stronger flavor, and I would have preferred a different wrapping method, but overall, these are really tasty! The price point is another huge factor in their favor. Anything under $1 per rangoon is very well priced. Worth trying for sure, especially if you’re on a budget.
