Road trip LA To SF and back

Model Y

Just finished a 4 day trip from LA to SF in a MY LR. Amazing car and very easy to charge and go. Used AP most of the way but had mix results. On the latest software but had about ~20 people phantom braking issues each way. Every time it happens it’s next to a truck that I’m passing by. It also brakes like mad. One instance someone almost rear ended me. Luckily I was prepared. Although AP is amazing and ahead of the game, there is a lot of room for improvements. The future is bright though. Worked through the rain and wind. 18 wheelers are still a serious issue.

What software are you on?

I noticed too on 2022.3.101.1 it was frequently confusing a shadow of a semi as being in your lane. I wondered if that improved in the recent 2022.8.2 as that build improved the other major problem with vision AP, freaking out that oncoming cars are in your lane.

2022.8.2. It did get better but semis are an issue.

Good to know. I posted a few days ago about 2022.8.2 being a large improvement about oncoming cars but still not perfect. Later this week I’ll have a drive that better tests this scenario but I’m not surprised. The neural nets are constantly improving but it’s gradual and not like a single update totally resolves a problem.

Vision autopilot has had a rough start but it is Tesla’s future. It’ll improve. Don’t let me tell you what it was like buying an Autopilot 2.0 car in early 2017, lol they took much longer to fix that.

Yes, the fact people pay for FSD is insanity with the issues that are prevalent.

This is what early adopters do. They buy stuff first on the excitement of trying new technology, and often have to suffer through all of the growing pains that most new tech goes through.

It’s not insanity, I love being a beta tester for this stuff. Finding edge cases and testing different versions for improvements or regressions is like my bread and butter, so when it breaks I’m in my element, and when it works I have a chauffeur.

One day, all of our cars will be autonomous (maybe Tesla, maybe not) and I’ll look back on this experience as a great way to remember how much things change and how crazy of a time we’re in right now.

How much faster were you than the trucks you passed (before the braking)

5 miles average and 10 miles most. Sometimes is slows down a little bit and that’s fine but I had hard brakes and that scared me.

And the warning beeps of the car don't help...

Thanks for sharing, good to know! Excited to get mine. We regularly do Bay Area to San Diego so I’m looking forward to the road trip

Which super chargers did you stop at?

Definitely stop by kettleman. I also did Hollister, Santa Cruz, Novato, and Sunnyvale. I was surprised how busy the Sunnyvale was in the evening on Sunday. It was packed at around 9 pm.

That’s like the one here in Burbank where I live. I went on a Sunday at like 9pm and there was a line. If you ever needed a reason to buy Tesla stock, just watch the money machine print at superchargers day in and day out haha

How do you engage CC without autopilot?

2
CompetitiveYou7OP•

Hit the shift once instead of twice
