With my wife out of town and being on Daddy duty full time with the kids on Spring Break from school, I am digging deep into my arsenal to keep the tribe happy and fed. Full disclosure, the kids had this for both lunch and dinner yesterday. Originally I was just planning on making the typical hot dogs rolled up in crescent rolls for lunch yesterday, but the kids lobbied for the enhanced version and I folded like a cheap suit. I had this for dinner last night myself after a rather long hiatus and I instantly remembered why this is so beloved.

The recipe for this was originally put out by Pillsbury themselves back in the day, but there is no mention of it on the company’s recipe website today. Likely because it would be considered too ostentatious for modern audiences. Like most casseroles this is very forgiving to make and open to making modifications as you see fit to suit your specific tastes. Or you can keep it old school and break out the cans or Hormel too.

Recipe in my wife’s always pristine handwriting is pic # 2

I’m sorry, that “folded like a cheap suit” has just got me in stitches! 🤣

No mention of the cheese in the directions, fyi!

Also, the directions call that a can of chili be poured on top of the already placed hot dog rolls, so how exactly does brushing butter on top of them work if they are already covered in chili? Thanks!

Commenting because I had the same question... Also, it seems like putting chili on top would make the crescent rolls not cook as well and/or come out soggy?

It doesn’t say to put the second can of chili on top of the crescents, it says add a second can of chili. Probably AROUND, not on top. this is similar to an old bisquick recipe for chili dog “pie”.

It doesn’t. The chili is poured in the dish and the piggies are placed on top.

Shit this is amazing, very similar to the famous Pinterest baked chili dog casserole. Thank you for sharing!

Nope. I draw the line at recipes that start with hot dogs.

Then literally don’t comment on this and keep scrolling. This guy is being a great dad while his wife is away and keeping his kids happy.

Hot dogs are their own food group. Nothing better, especially when kids are concerned.
