How to choose between the preposition IN and the preposition A in Italian

I always struggle with this, thanks so much for sharing!

wondering the difference between io sono and I sono. looking for the simple phrase "I am." nothing to follow, just the two words. i have seen ot both ways and don't understand the difference.
