Timeline on graduate assistantship decision?

Hi all,

I applied for the PhD program in mathematics back in December. I was told I would be accepted on February 28th, and interviewed by a professor regarding funding and assistantships the same week. I have since received an official acceptance letter, and an email containing information about financial aid, which said offers of aid were being prepared in March.

It is now April 1st, I have not heard anything about getting an assistantship (or funding at all), and I only have until April 15th to accept an offer for any graduate school, and without hearing anything i fear I may have to enroll at another school that has offered me full funding in their PhD program. I would really like to attend OSU, and am wondering if anyone else knows when an offer for assistantship will be extended or if I will just not be getting one at all.

It is perfectly appropriate to ask the department (via email) about the timeline of their decisions. For example, couldn't you just ask the person who interviewed you? Or the coordinator/advisor of the grad program?

This is almost identical to the situation I’m experiencing in biology. I made contact with a professor last November who said I’d be a good fit for the lab, but made it clear there wasn’t any funding available so I’d be relying on a gta. Applied to begin my PhD in spring or fall quarter but heard absolutely nothing. Finally I contacted the grad committee chair late February, and found out my prospective professor never communicated with the committee that they were interested in accepting a grad student, so they just let my application go to the wayside. I was never contacted to find out if I had an alternate advisor, or given a heads up that my chosen advisor wasn’t responding. Now all the gta-ships and scholarships have been allocated, and I’m S.O.L. My advice: do NOT wait to hear back from anyone! Be diligent, bug whoever you need to bug to make sure you stay in the loop, because nobody in the department is looking out for you. Good luck!

I'm not a math major at all but I'm curious how many people usually comprise a math PhD cohort at a state school?

Interesting. I'm doing CS and I'm enjoying the calculus series of math right now and have kinda mentally joked with myself that I should see how I fair in a masters of mathematics program

Wondering how different a class like, say calculus 2, is from the high level math classes you've encountered?

You should definitely email the graduate coordinator. I’m also probably going to Oregon since that’s the only school that accepted me with funding. I got my official letter (in particular, containing information regarding funding) on March 14th.
