Chance a Female for Computer Engineering at Ivies and Top Schools
Demographics: Gender, race/ethnicity, state, type of school, and hooks (URM, first generation, legacy, athlete, etc.): White Female from rural PA, Public School with extremely low acceptance rates to Ivies and T20/T50, Legacy at Penn (Brother went a couple years ago), and Gay if that may make a difference
Intended Major(s): Computer Engineering (Video Game Design Minor at CMU)
Schools: UPenn, Brown, Cornell, CMU, MIT, Stanford, USC, UMD, Lehigh, Harvey Mudd, CO School of Mines, CU Boulder (still deciding what schools to absolutely apply to and which I can change)
ACT/SAT/SAT II: SAT I: 1560 (780 M, 780 RW)
UW/W GPA and Rank: Rank 4/180, 100.16 Weighted GPA, School doesn't provide UW, but its probably about 97 or 98, COVID messed it up and the school's weighting system is horrible
Coursework: AP/IB/Dual Enrollment classes, AP/IB scores, etc.
School only offers AP to juniors and seniors, but max is 2 per year or 3 with school board approval, so I took AP Calc AB this year, planning on AP English and AP Chem next year, but so far not enough students signed up. Took all possible Honors courses available, two dual enrollment courses this year, probably 2 or 3 next year
Awards: Member of 3 Honor Societies, National Merit Finalist (likely), Winner of Essay Contest for 10 Local Schools, National Qualifier in Future Business Leaders of America, Chosen as Chemistry Student of the Year by Teacher
Extracurriculars: Include leadership & summer activities
- Future Business Leaders of America: Chapter President (junior and senior), 1st at regionals twice, 3rd at regionals once, top 10 at states 5 times (plus more this year), national qualifier at least once (maybe this year too)
- Technology Student Association: Chapter Vice President (junior) Chapter President (senior), Top 3 at regionals 7 times, State Qualifier and may place this year
- Key Club: Over 100 hours of service, maybe over 150 by next year
- State Business Camp: One Week Camp that I was chosen for and attended, Team placed First in one event and was honorable mention in another
- Paid Job at Local Retail Store: Work about 20 hours a week at a large retail chain store as a cashier
- Local Club about Philanthropy: Meetings about what philanthropy is, take applications from local non profit organizations and then give out $5000 in grants each year
- Varsity Track and Field: Thrower for the Varsity Track and Field Team 9-12
- Independent Studies: Built multiple personal computers for myself and others, made somewhat of a small business out of it. School does not offer any computer science courses, so I have taken Python and Java courses online.
- Summer Program this year: Accepted to Governor's School for Sciences, Waiting on decisions from MIT MOSTEC and MIT Women's Tech Program but I will attend one of the three
Essays/LORs/Other: Optionally, guess how strong these are and include any other relevant information or circumstances.
LOR: Chemistry Teacher/Key Club Advisor (9/10): She chose me as chem student of the year, has known me since before I was in high school, thinks extremely highly of me and has written multiple letters of rec for my summer program apps
Economics Teacher/FBLA Advisor/Track Coach (8.5/10): Obviously knows me in many ways and I have worked closely with him as president of FBLA and he knows I was a good student
Essays (8/10): I have drafts of most of my essays and the people I've shown them to have said they were good, but I still need to polish them before app season.
I obviously don't have as rigorous a schedule as many others applying to these schools, but my school is extremely bad at offering AP classes and without other kids signing up I can't take the classes. I hope my involvement in ECs and improved Essays will show I am worthy of admission.
