Uh what? How? Housing/apartments in Rockford are DIRT cheap.

This article is totally bogus. San Francisco is not on the list of most expensive. Impossible.

When I lived in Rockford, my monthly tax escrow payment was higher than my mortgage.

Blame the school district. Piss poor results for over half your tax bill.

Oh I remember.

If you read the article, you would see that it takes other factors into account. Rent is only 15%, and house cost another 15%. It's mostly based on job market.

I read the article and their breakdown doesn't make sense to me.

So let's say the job market sucks in Rockford. Fair point. But take someone like a nurse in Rockford making $60k vs a nurse in L.A. making $125k. What kind of living conditions can those 2 people expect?

Or let's say someone from S.F. working from home making $200k moves to Rockford. Can they expect better "affordability" here? I would certainly expect so.

A house in Rockford going for $150k would be a million dollars in other areas. You mean to tell me that those differences only account for 15% of the outcome?

And Madison beats Rockford in terms of affordability? Or Chicago? This article is completely wrong.

Presumably, it's relative to pay.

"Real Per Capita Personal Income " was 10% of the factor. So even though they considered it, it is not relative.

Fails to factor in remote work, which greatly benefits the local secondary market, which is where historically low wages were found.

Yea if you wanna live in the ghetto. Decent apartmentsnare expensive as shit.

This comment is correct. Places are either cheap and terrible or are over $2k for a two bedroom.

Madison is more affordable than Rockford? Oh my. We have a modest 2,000 sq ft house, 2 car garage and average yard for the area (I count myself as lucky every day to have a house and I see those rent prices increasing locally) and I don't think we could do anything close to that in Madison. It only took about two minutes on Zillow to confirm.

Yes, our property tax payments are close to our mortgage payment. The thing is, that same sized house is going to have even higher absolute property taxes in Madison. Sure the rate is a lower percent, but I would rather pay 4% of 150k than 2% of 400k. Plus WI income tax is higher for most residents than here.
