7 Months as a sysadmin
Just wanted to make a quick post about the job I landed back in September.
I was a Help Desk Analyst for a few years at a regional hospital.
I couldn't take it anymore. The never-ending on-call rotations, guys who didn't pull their weight or passed tickets off to others, bosses who didn't really care because they didn't want to rock the boat...
Then I landed a job with my current company in probably the most fortuitous way..
I showed up to the interview, still on-call, half asleep, just in that f**k it, don't waste my time kind of mood...
I even had asked them during the interview "why me? I don't have any certs, or a bachelor's degree. Why me?"
Turns out the current sysadmin was a graduate of the same college I went to.
Got a call a few days later to come back for a hands-on interview. Did fairly well, but not my best. Definitely was more awake and humble. Asked alot of questions, took notes, and left feeling pretty good.
Then I met the VP and the CFO, and that went really well. Didn't hear back for a few days, until I got a call from HR...
They ended up hiring me!
It's honestly been the best job I've had up until this point. I remember the sysadmin telling me after one of the interviews that I almost talked myself out of the job! Funny how things workout when you just say screw it, I'm not going to put on a front, and just be open and honest about yourself.
It's been a great experience. Very little calls outside of hours(knock on wood), good benefits, good vacation and PTO time, normal M-F, 8-5 schedule. I can come and go as I please.
I still feel overwhelmed at times because I don't know everything, but that's how you're supposed to feel. Certs are going to come in the future, probably this summer if I put my head down and study.
Shoutout to all the lone-wolf IT Admins out there. Shoutout to this community as well for helping me in the past when services like AWS goes down. You the real MVPs!
