Important note: u/OhioVsEverything comments very often encouraging me to try China Bell in Grove City. Your wait is almost over, my friend :) Stay tuned for next week's review.
Now, for this week's. I headed over to Bexley to try out Peking Dynasty on Livingston. I couldn't find the comment of the person who recommended these to me, so if it was you, let me know!
Peking Dynasty
6 for $6.95
Filling: 7/10
Wrapper: 7/10
Sauce: 6/10
Value: 4/5
Overall: 24/35
Filling: I enjoyed this filling, but I didn’t see much in it to distinguish it from other ‘goon fillings. There was a very light seafood flavor which I found refreshing, but I wanted more of it. The big perk to this filling was the onion flavor. It wasn’t overwhelming, but the steady onion flavor was very tasty. There were thin slices of onion in the filling as well which added something to the texture that I found enjoyable. My main complaint was that I was craving a bit more salt from the filling. When paired with the sauce, I found that the salt flavor was more present, but as a standalone, the filling needed more of it.
Wrapper: I was surprised by these wrappers. I always criticize triangle wrappers, and these still fit into the category of needing more filling, but the wrappers themselves were very enjoyable. They were some of the best cooked wrappers I have ever had. They were incredibly thin and had just the amount of oil on them to hit the spot. The only thing keeping these wrappers from the upper levels of my ratings is the shape. There were several rangoon that really needed more filling, however, the wrapper was very well cooked, so it’s getting a solid score.
Sauce: The sauce was a fairly classic sweet and sour. It did include a light orange note which made for a refreshing bite and helped set it apart a little from the standard buy at the store sauces. I think the sauce did an excellent job of making the filling shine. The filling lacked salt, however, when eaten alongside the sauce, the sweetness really brought out the saltier flavor of the filling I had been missing. It’s not too sweet, which I appreciate. Overall, a solid sauce, just a bit uninspired.
Overall: All in all, this is a good crab rangoon. I feel good about recommending it. However, I am getting to the point where I have sampled so many that it’s really hard to ‘wow’ me unless you’re doing something with your rangoon that really sets you apart, and these aren’t doing that. The filling is good - I love the onion, the wrapper is tasty, and the sauce is solid, but they’re all pretty traditional. Overall, I enjoyed these quite a lot, but they lack the originality that truly makes the best type of crab rangoon. They’re very affordable though, and I can say for certain that if you’re looking for good crab rangoon on a budget, these will satisfy.
