Has anyone else tried to replace photoshop/gimp with krita? How did it go? What did you think was missing?

Misc

As a long time ps user (like early 00s) who quit proprietary software altogether, I had to make do with gimp for close to 5 years now. I am not trying to bash gimp, but I did not enjoy using it. My main use has been a bit of concept art, with texturing and memes. I recently decided I couldn't keep using gimp and just started editing and painting textures in krita.

While the editing workflow was a bit different (expectedly) I found it faster to work with and actually enjoyable. Painting is already where krita shines anyway, so it was a cherry on top. I'd love to hear some more success stories

I started doing digital art with Photoshop, over 10 years ago. A while later, I started to get into FOSS and decided to check out other software. GIMP was very close to PS, as in they were both serviceable for digital illustration but it never felt as their primary function. Then I tried out MyPaint, which I liked the endless canvas mode, but for some reason I never fully got into. I learned about Krita afterwards, and I've been exclusive using it ever since. Hard to believe it was 6-7 years now.

I switched from Photoshop to Krita. There were a few things that were a bit confusing at first, but for the most part it was fine. The few things I do miss I've been trying to add via plugins or code(one of the big advantage of open source).

I also tried gimp before, but it was a bit of a pain. I felt more at home switching to Krita.

If you are making memes for example, one thing that may be annoying is the text tool. Krita is right now redoing it so hopefully we will have a proper text tool soon. In the meantime, I just made a prototype plugin LazyTextTool to do on canvas text.

Yeah I still rasterize text layers from gimp and paste them in lol. i'll give your plugin a shot!

I used GIMP and Inkscape for 7-8 years -- and then I tried Krita a year ago. I've been exclusively using Krita since then except I recently installed Inkscape again because I missed the text tools.

I made the switch to Krita as well, but still do a little bit of post-work in Photoshop. I prefer it overall but Krita's text tool just doesn't compare, and Photoshop has some different filters and effects I haven't (easily) replicated yet.
