Disney has already convinced politicians to extend their copyrights twice, what's going to stop them from doing that again? They're an even larger, wealthier, and influential entity now with their acquisitions than they were when the last extension was added in 1998.
If the answer involves trusting in the good decision making of politicians choosing to do the right thing instead of the profitable one, please forgive my skepticism that anything will change.

True, but my hope lies in people being more conscientious about copyright law than they were in 1998. Given how aware people are about the actions of companies and lawmakers through the internet, I imagine a much larger shitstorm if Disney tried anything like they have done in the past. Maybe the profitable thing would to just let the copyright expire

This isn't completely as much as people think it is. Disney didn't just "extend" it on a whim, the entire entertainment industry in the US was lobbying for it to be extended for almost an entire decade. If there were plans for it to be extended again, Disney and major music/movies rights-holders would've already be working on that for years

Yes, but Disney was the single largest entity behind the push, and is even larger now.
The extension has colloquially become known as the Mickey Mouse Protection Act and when Clinton signed it there was a press event with a Mickey mascot present. Obviously the industry at large benefitted, but Disney's outsized influence as a financial and cultural institution can't be downplayed.
