Can't Run Multiplayer

So my friend wants to play with me, and yet she can't run the game multiplayer (vanilla, PC). She can run it singleplayer, but she doesn't enjoy it as much, and hasn't been able to run it at all in multiplayer. Any recommendations as to what we could do? I host for other friends and there isn't lag so I don't think it's internet, but it could be.
