This again. Only goes to show that while the Europe has progressed through the last 80 years into a civilized regime supporting lawful international order, Russia’s progress has stagnated to 19th century. Their whole country would be safe and prosperous if they could let go of their stale fantasies of an empire that has nothing to give to the progress of international order and humanity and would modernize and integrate with their surroundings in peaceful, equal terms. But they can’t, because there’s people in charge who can’t. Path dependence holds true only as long as there’s no will to choose otherwise. Muscovites can’t stand a thought of letting go their autocratic power and privileges. That’s what’s up. Nobody was attacking Russia from the West, and nobody wanted to even think about doing so. Russia chose war, because war is what Russia believes in.

Pueyo is either a useful idiot or a Kremlin gremlin.

He has bought into the "vast plains" narrative hook and sinker.

It is very easy to demolish that narrative - the existence of different language groups within that plain shows that there are geographical features that separate regions from each other. Watersheds. Different biomes and ecotopes. Which is why the meaning of the original name of that land is Boatland / Rowland / Rus - because the forest zone to the north of the steppes has watersheds between the rivers Volga - Dniepr - Väina (Daugava) and Viena (Northern Dvina) littered with floodplains between swamps that have bogged down the logistics of each and every major military campaign ever. There is a very good reason for the linguistic grouping of volga finnics and baltic finnics and it has everything to do with separating geographical features - the ones that Pueyo has chosen to ignore.

Which brings us back to Pueyo being either a useful idiot or a Kremlin gremlin.

PS. Pueyo himself wrote that firearms changed the dynamics on the steppes, whatever threat there was is long gone.

PPS. The existence of uralic finns in Finland and estonians in Estonia is evidence that one can protect itself to some extent even against such enemies as Russia and Germany.

edit.
PPPS. Moscow was originally settled by the volga-finnic Dyakovo culture. Moscow remained predominantly finnic until the 12th century AD. Russians in the european forest zone are genetically about 50% finno-ugric. Russification. Imperial rootlessness. Russian empire is a matrjoshka empire - it is all matrjoshkas, all the way down.

That is very well conveyed. Saving this. Thank you.

Interesting read. I wonder if the World could not just finance a big ass Wall around Moscow… then they would feel protected and could shut the fuck up. Of course it would not just keep invaders out, but also the conquerors inside.

This is bullshit. "Why A"? "Because of B". Things are not so simple.
