Repeat after me: Twitter and Elon Musk are not in my class interest
I get that a lot of people are looking at the Elon Musk/Twitter thing with certain outlooks. I get that some are seeing hypocrisy abound along with the ramped up censorship and noticing what's gone.
But let's be clear. I'm not a millionaire. I'm not a billionaire. I don't give a damn about IPOs. I don't care about profit margins.
I'm a working class individual that sees a publisher destroying worker rights for their own class interests. Now we've talked about cultural sanctions as well as collateral damage and Twitter has been in the center of it. 2009-2013 was when they allowed free speech for the Arab Spring movement in regards to the Middle East. But ever since 2016, they were willing and capable of shutting down speech for dissidents. Some of you might not remember years long censorship campaigns but they certainly exist and have been prevalent for the past two decades, if not longer.
When a platform becomes a publisher, it's time to find a platform. A quick definition:
Platforms allow everyone to discuss whatever without their thumb on the scale. That's what is supposed to be protected under Safe Harbors. As it stands, Rumble is currently a platform, Rokfin is a platform, Odyssey is a platform. Even Bit chute.
Publishers curate and control content. Youtube curates what's on their Tubes. Twitter curates tweets that go against establishment narratives. Facebook constantly censors those that are dissident.
Without any say so, you do not control what content you create. A publisher does. Thus, these are not platforms as stated.
As such, why are you interested in whether Elon Musk owns them or not? Elon might speak a big game, but even for his own workers, he has a terrible record. No billionaire really has a good one and this is reminiscent of company towns which essentially screw workers even harder.
At this point, Twitter is spent for social capital. It's time to find better endeavors and embrace digital migration and move to other platforms that better serve your class interests.
If a platform becomes a publisher, move away. Move to a better one. Don't trust the old one because it will not change back to what you nostalgically remember.
This is the beginning of a strike. A boycott. Divest your time from horrific publishers and find platforms. That's how you encourage better cultural economy.
So watch as Twitter flails about, but remember. For you, the person that's not making that money, it's time to move on. If Twitter wants to go the way of Myspace, let them. Invest elsewhere.
