May camping in California?

Trip Advice

I'm looking for a dispersed site in California early May. I have been leaning towards Sequoia National Forest.. but was wondering if it might be too cold? I also have a high clearance 4x4 so off-road trails not a problem! Anyone have any recommended areas I should start looking?

Rock Creek. Look at the walk in sites. Great access. But honestly if you have a 4x4, I'd check the off roading subs. They got all the secrets.

Welp, snowing there now. Could snow higher there in early May; it has on me in the past. Or be nicely warm. Not sure what "too cold" means, but I assume snow.

Assuming the roads are open, and free of down trees and other obstacles, I'd just wait until you get a decent 3 day weather report and adjust. Or just stay low.

IIRC Hume Lake area is in Sequoia NF not Sequoia Nat Park, and there were some nice areas we rode through around there, and also north of the pavement short of the Princess campground.

I forgot to add I couldn't remember if it burned...might want to check that first.

Yes! I put that layer on in Gaia and it’s devastating how many areas have burned to wildfires. Overwhelming at times. I believe that was the rough fire in 2015
