Thruster & Designing ships around them.

HELP

I have always had trouble with thrusters, be it not having enough of them or to much power draw. What I am asking for is good looking ships also that fly really well so I can study them. I only care that the ships work in atmosphere. I would also love some tips for thruster as well. A link to their workshop page would be fine if you could!

I made this when i was still learning how SE works, currently working on a 3.0 version to polish the aesthetics.https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2737104670

And this is my latest ship design https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2793236455

(Im also working on an ultra barebones base ship, i might upload it to the workshop later) https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/276419022512324618/965672990857629716/2022-04-18-19-59-30-276.png)

Thanks man! I will check them out later. Hope I can gather some information from them.

think efficient, i won't try to out build my own design but size to weight ratio how well the weapons are placed for combat make something worth making is my point of view.

i achieved everything i wanted to in that regard but you can take what you want and learn from it.

I like the engines on the back. Thanks!

Some thoughts/pointers:

For starters, I'd recommend keeping the ship cargo modifier at 1x ("Realistic") while refining your skills. Playing at 3x or 10x reduces the effective mass of items inside your ship (while still showing the unmodified mass on your HUD), which can make it harder to get a good feel for how much load your ship can handle.

After that, check out the thruster comparison chart on the wiki: https://spaceengineerswiki.com/Thruster

At sea level and at 1.0 gravity, 10 kN can support about 1,000 kg of mass. I'd recommend planning around using no more than ~50-60% of your ship's max vertical thrust at it's working load (when fully loaded) so that you still have enough thrust leftover to do things like "stop moving downwards" in a reasonable amount of time.

For example, for small-grid atmo utility ships I tend to plan around 5,000 kg per small thruster and 30,000 kg per large thruster as a quick rule of thumb.

For "rule of thumb" numbers when planning carry weight for small-grid miners, each med cargo container can hold about 10,000 kg of ore, each large container can hold about 45,000 kg fully loaded, a drill can hold about 6,000 kg, and things like cockpits or connectors can hold about 3,000 kg. You don't want to plan around fully loading your drills because they can fill unevenly, but wasting weight on more cargo containers than you can carry when full just reduces your overall carry capacity.

Another note on small-grid miners: the widest you can space your drills and still get complete ore/stone removal (if you want to be able to tunnel without using secondary/boring mode) is five blocks between mounting points in one direction, and four block between mounting points in the other. That is: if you make a square 7 blocks wide and 6 squares tall, then you can place a drill on each corner block and still get full coverage when tunneling in standard drilling mode. The more tightly packed your drills are, the faster you can push through rock or ore, but spreading them out helps keep ship weight low which improves carry capacity per mining run.

The density of finished components is too variable to plan in the same way you can with ores, so for welders or grinders you just need to keep an eye on your weight while flying.

Large atmo thrusters are more efficient in terms of energy usage and thrust-to-weight, but for the volume of a single large thruster you can fit in an extra battery and six small thrusters, which is sometimes more useful (particularly for assault or scouting craft).

For forward/backward and side thrusters, think about how much of an angle you plan on flying at when full loaded. The amount of thrust you need to stay airborne and maneuver is the sin of the angle you expect to tilt in that direction times your max load. For example, I tend to use 20 degrees as my cutting angle for my planetary miners, so sin(20) = ~1/3 of upwards thrust pointing forward and backwards.

Make sure you have enough batteries to power your two most power-hungry directions at max load at the same time -- usually lift plus forward or reverse. Falling out of the sky because you hit the brakes hard with a heavy load and didn't have enough power can be pretty annoying.

Anyway, I hope some of that was useful. Good luck!

edit - Fixed a few typos and wrongly placed decimals.
