CDL Medical fail...

I had shoulder replacement surgery, in march and I cannot raise my arms above my head yet... Im getting ready to begin training for my CDL (class starts in June) and the doc failed me saying i needed to be able to hold 50lbs in both hands above my head... So now i cant even take my written test... Any loose medical examiners in northern colorado???

Bullllll shit. I’ve never had to hold 50 lbs above my head. Go to another clinic.

Thats what i thought too... I already know i dont want to run flatbeds for just that reason!! Preemployment physical i expected this not on a pre cdl physical...

I’ve taken DOT physicals for ten years. Never have I had to hold any weight. I also go to a well renowned provider, not one of these 24 hour clinics. I can see a specific employer wanting a physical to see what kind of wait you can hold, but when it comes to DOT to get your license you’re not holding weight.

That is EXACTLY my thoughts... WTF??

You are allowed a 2nd opinion, just go somewhere else and try again. Chiropractor offices are generally easy places to get your medical cert from. It's easy work for them. Plus a chiropractor would be a lot more understanding about your shoulder.

Google maps, do a search for DOT phyisical

Check the Google reviews before you go. I can easily pass my dot physical but this one place I went to literally just gave me a 2yr card after I filled out the paperwork and read 1 line off the eye chart, never even spoke to a Dr, assuming they even had one there. So places like that are out there.

Go to an urgent care they generally dont care as long as gour blood pressure and eyesight is fine

I’ve had test where I had to do all that and I’ve had test where I haven’t so it’s not really “BS” . Honestly I’ve even had a test where the clinch simply didn’t feel like doing it and just signed my card and sent me on my way lol. So yeah you’re just gonna have to find a good one honestly and even then you’re gonna have to find a good company that’s not gonna retest you doing orientation as well cuz I’ve had jobs that didn’t care that my med card was new. They would wanna restest me anyway

I would understand if this was a preemployment physical... I wouldnt want to hire someone who i knew had a broken back to do hard physical labor... But this is just to get my permit, to learn to drive... I dont ever want to throw tarps, Im way too old for that shit...

We’ll have two test in my 9 years of driving that required me to hold weight over my head. One was a physical job and one was drop and hook. The one I took before going to school didn’t require such a test. But ehh lol. You’re not telling them you had surgery correct?

1
VisionbuilderOP•

yes I did, since Percocet can stay in your system for 90 days, and its been about 60 days... i didn't want to fail cuz i had opioids in my system... I can totally see that requirement for pre employment , but not for license... and as far a drop and hook i can dead lift 135 easy now, and drop and hook is 90% below the waist...

and its been about 60 days

You're clean and even if you're not just bring the rx with you when they piss you, don't mention the surgery if you're just getting your license, tell them the rx was for dental work.

Lmao go to like 3 different clinics, I've never actually had one ask me to do much. One time the guy spun my arms around a bit to check range of motion but that was it. You'll get through on one of them.

Concentra. They really don't give a fck.

There're more than a few drivers that can't hold much more than a steering wheel and a burrito.

That's really surprising considering I used to work with a guy who had our company pay to install a spinning handle onto the steering wheel of his truck because he only had one arm.

If you are on your own to get your med card, go see a different doctor

I will, i just wanted to make sure that i wasnt going to run into this at every doc...

My company uses this company. I never had to hold anything above my head. Aviation and Occupational Medicine

Awesome... Yeah i think the Doc was on a power trip... I guess our local Kings Sooper does them in their little clinic for 100... Gonna try that next...

I’ve had a CDL for about 30 years, and I’ve never had to do that. I have one messed up shoulder from an accident, but I don’t think I could lift 50 lbs over my head even with my good shoulder (I could probably do 30). As you mentioned, I would expect this in a test for a job where I might have to lift 50 lbs over my head, but not for a DOT physical. My current job doesn’t involve any lifting, and, knowing my limitations, I wouldn’t apply for a job that required me to do that.

Exactly... I have a call into the Docs boss, to see about either getting a refund or having her override the doc and call it good...

I'd go to another clinic, thats ridiculous, i think my shoulder exercise took like 2 seconds and she moved on to something else, think i spent like 10 mins doing everything, it was super fast.

When i lived in California, there was an janky looking rv at the rest stop on 99 just south of Kingsburg, he had a big sign for CDL medical testing... Same deal?? Lol...

No, it's a chiropractor inside the TA. I don't remember the phone number or name, just call the TA and they will connect you or give you the number to call for an appointment. Took about 30 minutes. I think I paid $65.
