[Monster] About the ending...

SpoilerDiscussion

I don't see the option to mark this thread as a spoiler, so if the title wasn't enough, don't read past this if you haven't watched/are watching Monster.

So I finished Monster yesterday and I'm confused. I searched around, but after failing to find anything satisfactory I've come to ask myself.

I still can't wrap my head around Johan's motives and goals. What was his endgame here? I know he planned the 'perfect suicide' because that's what the show said, but how does terrorizing a city accomplish this?

And I've just remembered, but his supposed split personality was never brought back up again after Tenma found out about it. What was that about? I don't understand it, because he always appeared to be the exact same person.

I think these are great questions about Monster. I think Monster has several layers. I don't think any of us anime fans know why Johan Liebert did the things he did. I think human beings are mysterious. I think humans act on their feelings too. Monster is a psychological and deep anime. I'm glad you're discussing it with us.

You can watch this video if you want. Does a good job of explaining the ending and a bunch of other things.

I like Monster but the anime certainly has its flaws and plot conveniences.

From my understanding, what he did in Ruhenheim is basically a small-scale version of his plan for the world, which he abandoned after a mid-life crisis in Berlin, and that he chose the town for the suicide because Bonaparta lives there.

As for his split-personality, I don't really recall anything pertaining to it outside of Lunge's incorrect assumption of Johan being Tenma's split persona. The only other thing I recall is Johan's identity crisis over his and Anna's memories. Maybe Tenma does mention it somewhere, but I don't think it was ever seriously considered by him.
