"Why don't they rebuild the library and why don't they build an event centre"

"Ok, we'll do that"

"Not like that, not there, I don't like the design, it costs too much" etc

"whatever it is, I'm against it" - Disgusted of Wellington

It seems like the waterfront is not that suitable for buildings, given the number of new and award winning buildings that have failed.

It might be better to find some rock to place foundations on; leave the wobbly mush to parks and pedestrians?

It’ll be the hanging floors that were common during the time, ala stats house and the BNZ building.

im still stunned that meridian building has suffered such a fate so soon in its useful life! that would have been one of the last buildings i would have expected to have issues in that area. hopefully the new one coming up right next to it doesnt have any issues!

They could do what Te Papa did, and stomp piles into the ground for a couple of years.

I used to be able to hear those pile drives from Tawa.

Yes but not if they're for offices or apartments..

It does seem like a loss when we take prime public open spaces and turn them into offices. An office can basically be plonked down anywhere, doesn't even need to be cbd really.

Sure, why not. An alpine fault quake centered north of Greymouth will probably wipe out Wellington (assuming 9.0+), and a decent sized Wellington quake will probably do the same.

Thats if our crumbling water infrastructure can cope with anything smaller than that, meaning that half of the city gets a fun disease such as dysentery, and the other half die due to severe dehydration.

Pretty sure reseach has shown that Wellington goes up in a quake, not down, and any sizable buildings need to have foundations into bedrock anyways.

Those flash apartments on the waterfront by Te Papa make me nervous everytime I see them. It's such a precarious place... I wouldn't live in those if you paid me to.
