I'd be a happy prisoner of war

Poem

Freedom? I've never known

how to use it. So don't

give me an empty calendar

and an internet connection on Sundays.

I'm always making

my own handcuffs,

my hands shaking

as I below another day on distraction

so when people speak

of Mao and Stalin

I know it's sick

but I envy those

forced to wait in bread lines.

Lord, grant me a cage with wiggle room

put my back against the wall

force me to be anything other than melancholy.

One of my favorite things about poetry is its ability to evoke a feeling that already lives inside the reader. For me, this poem did just that. I know that feeling of having too much freedom, and I think you nailed it with some of your images. “Empty calendar” and “internet connection on sundays” are both images/feelings that stir something up without being overly dramatic or wordy. Loved it.

Also the desperation that builds throughout and culminates in the final ultimate plea to the god figure. This poem resonates with me.

I’d also add the way you cut your lines gives it a pacing that matches the tone. Sort of choppy and intense.

One nitpicky criticism - did you mean to write blow rather than below near the middle? Easy mistake to make but I had to pause and re-read to make sure I was getting it right. Kinda interrupted the flow.

It was meant to be blow*! Thanks.

"I'm always making / my own handcuffs"

This were the lines that I fell in love with while I was reading. I'm typing this response on a technological marvel on which I spend hours per day doomscrolling instead of being out in the world. Your choice to not say "I spend all day scrolling and scrolling" and instead frame it the way you did worked beautifully. And the contrast between scrolling on a phone and standing in bread lines is stark and wonderful.

I love the last stanza; it captures our inability to do anything about it at all. You could've easily said "please help me" but the imagery you chose here conveys the desperation and the powerlessness.

The flow is hard to read at first, but I think it works well with the tone. Thank you for sharing!

Nice Poem, But I do think that staying at home with internet connection is a bad comparison to become a prisoner of war. Well I do think that you compare it in a way where your life right now is full of freedom that you don't know what to do, that's why you want others to dictate what you need to do, hence the prisoner. Anyway Cool

I know that it's a ridiculous comparison; in fact, the fact that it's so pathetic is a testament to just how little perspective suffering has brought me.

I agree with a fellow commentor, "I'm always making my own handcuffs" is the line i relate the most with. I have some things with me and i know how much i like restraining my options so as not to have anxiety and stress.

I wish to write like this, and express away my mind in one go
