Art Fridays : Update

Important

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for all your wonderful contributions!

The moderation team has decided to add one thing to the criteria

Yes

  • High quality, high effort. Not everyone is an artist, we understand that. But please don’t post something for the sake of it; this is not the opportunity for karma farming. We want to recognize art of all forms, but art that is inspiring, morale boosting and engaging.
  • Keep it relevant: We are sure your art is lovely, but please keep it Ukraine related. As in, do not stick a flag behind your art that you made years ago that was not originally created with Ukraine in mind. Karma farming = NO
  • Original content from the original artist is best, but not absolutely required. Amazing street art that’s not yours? Great, include a country in the title.
  • Post Variety: Please do not post the same art each time. There are thousands of art pieces that deserve attention; please don’t submit the same one 5 times. If you have *different* art (most artists make more than one piece, of course), then we encourage artists to post their work.
  • Post all types: Poetry, music/songs, digital art, traditional fine arts, street art. Yes, yes yes.
  • Description: Please provide the title, and let us know what medium you used, and any other relevant info.
  • Post in good faith. Art Days are meant to lighten the mood.

NO

  • No memes, low effort posts. “I took a picture of this cloud that sort of looks like Zelensky” is not art.
  • Flag posts. We get that you want to show us your house in Texas that has a Ukraine flag flying from the front porch, but it’s not art.
  • Low effort phone pictures. Is photography art? Yes. But there’s a difference, and that difference is art. We encourage photography, but not low effort mobile pictures.
  • No stealing. Do not pass off other art as your own. If you do not know the artist, DO NOT say it is you. Just don’t do it. Be transparent and honest, or don’t post.
  • Spamming us with messages. If we deleted your post, there’s probably a good reason. We are not perfect, so if you feel your art was legitimately removed in error, then we can discuss it. But that is the exception.

NO PUTIN.

  • Yes, words can't express our "feelings" for him. We have decided that he doesn't deserve a place in our happy time, so please refrain from giving that thing any more attention than it deserves.

We understand that these rules are subjective. It will vet out MOST problematic posts that are not focused on our vision. But, exceptions can be made if you feel we have misjudged your post.

I completely agree with the random flag posts. The free world has made it obvious that we are with Ukraine , but some people make it seem like a popularity contest about who gives the most “support”.

I agree. In some ways I find it super disingenuous most times, the embodiment of "virtue signalling" - literal flags to show your virtue. On the other hand I understand that the futility of being an individual in a world at war can be terrible, and you yearn to do something - anything - to help.

I swear I dunno what is wrong with people that feel the need to post garbage to this sub. Go somewhere else.

You guys are just burning out the mods for shitty Karma, check ur heads

They added "no Putin" and now mods are Nazis, comparable to the occupying Russian murderers? Please get some perspective.

No I’m saying so many overlapping rules and regulations, posts being taken down for no reason, political correctness and what not, one guy brought up how trump was the first one to start arming Ukraine and how Biden should have kept the ball rolling and it was full of hate comments and taken down without explanation. Too many people getting offended, even calling the Russians a clean slur or saying they look more Asian gets your commments or posts taken down. This subreddit is very very different from the Ukrainian subreddit in Ukrainian

I'm not sure what your objection to the rules is? Go to the subreddit you like instead of trying to change this one.

Trump withdrew aid from Ukraine so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Think of this as the "Western" facing Ukrainian subreddit. It's largely catering to Western sensibilities and has probably been at least a part of the support from civilians in the West.

I call Russians Orcs and fertilizer and wish them dead all the time and never get censored.

3
[deleted]•

I’ve been censored for saying orc, had to say orca for a while. Also he didn’t withdraw aid, he used it to try to force Ukraine to invest Biden, which we should have done, but that wouldn’t have been too great if Biden won which Ukraine say as a real outcome.

Maybe that's where the root of this problem lies. It's influenced by westerners, who are already stained by political correctness and are very sensitive to everything controversal

I_LIKE_TRIALS•

I understand what you're trying to say, but in my personal experience "political correctness" and "wokeness" are only a problem for people who don't understand irony or satire.

3
[deleted]•

Lol yeah, haha

Why no Putin? Attention doens't mean approval or admiration. Arts picturing him grotesque can feel relieving... What's the point of this? Can someone elaborate on it?

It becomes a race to the bottom, to see who can depict him in the most demeaning fashion. I have several images in mind, right now, as we speak.

But that doesn't build morale or uplift the community. Nobody here has the tiniest regard for that person. That is more than sufficient.

You may disagree with this, I am just one voice

9
Decent-Stretch4762•

who can depict him in the most demeaning fashion.

why is that bad, exactly? The OP post literally says: "Art Days are meant to lighten the mood." As a Ukrainian that does lighten my mood.

But that doesn't build morale or uplift the community.

it does. I think you just don't feel it because you're not here, and I'm not trying to be condescending or mean. But even these tiny things help. I hate his fucking face, but I feel like there's always a small chance that he'll see one of these images somewhere on the internet and it will make him a tiny bit angrier, that little son of a bitch.

TruthyLieUSA•

Valid points on both sides -- maybe it's worth discussing with the mods / admin to request a single "Putin Roast" thread that can contain all submissions and is easier for people to view or skip as they see fit?

Or, create a dedicated subreddit just for that. Anything that can provide access for people who feel strengthened by such content without putting it on the feeds of people who would really rather not.

5
Decent-Stretch4762•

Yeah fair enough. I hate to see his ugly face (like seriously before this war I didn't even know you can be repulsed by someone's face this badly) as much as the next Ukrainian guy, but every bit helps, even these tiny pieces of art and memes. They show who's side the world is on and how we all really think of him. You should see our telegram channels! It's all a part of informational warfare and although I agree this sub shouldn't be about that or about him, a weekly mocking thread (for example) would be nice for morale and shitposting

WhatAboutTheBee•

I took your response in a positive way. You make alot of sense.

I actually cannot wait for the G20 summit. When the first order of business is to vote russia out of the G20. Their economy will not be in the top 20 and he gets to fly back home.

Empty handed and humiliated.

That will be the world spitting in his eye, and is likely to piss him off!

_machDenmark•

Using art to be an uplifting reprieve from the evils of war can be very rewarding. If the intent is to give people such a reprieve, then looking at the face of the war's orchestrator might not be ideal.

Apologies for being such a noob, but how/where do I upload something for Art Friday?

2
TheRoppongiCandymanOPCrescent Was 🚫 BANNED•

Just post on the sub and use the art Friday flair

1
yablinga•

I tried that and it was rejected by the mods. Never mind, thanks for your help.

That wasn't removed by us, it must have gotten caught up in reddits spam filters.

I like it, may I suggest you try and post it for next week, then DM me. I'll manually approve it.

Super, will try to remember to do so! Thanks.

I felt that. Like, there's some heft to this statement - it's not quite sarcastic, but it's in the ballpark... I love the mods here.

Hello. I am new to posting art for Art Fridays. I tried to select the "Art Friday" flair but that wasn't an option for me. So when I posted my artwork the post immediately got taken down. How should I correctly share my art?

1
TheRoppongiCandymanOPCrescent Was 🚫 BANNED•

🎨 Art Friday!

Friday (00:01AM LINT) and Friday Arts is up until the art Friday post is 48 hours old (11:59PM SST).

1
LyraTheArtist•

Err....does this mean I should have posted my Friday art when it was Thursday?

1
TheRoppongiCandymanOPCrescent Was 🚫 BANNED•

We start art Friday from 12:00am LINT - first place in the world to see Friday and we end it at 11:59 SST - the last place in the world to see Friday.

The easiest thing for you to understand would be, post your art, when it's Friday for you.

1
LyraTheArtist•

Ok, I'll try again. It's still Friday here for me.

1
LyraTheArtist•

Can I post my art and link it to the original site that it came from?

I don't know if you're aware, but moderators have sole discretion over what is posted on any given sub.

3
Mind_Island•

Well yeah, that's obvious, you're not wrong... However, you've completely, totally missed the point I'm making, or chose to overlook it in favour of trying to start an argument over a differing opinion...

2
I_LIKE_TRIALS•

I moderate a pretty small subreddit. It's less than 500 people. It's a chore to even look in every other day and make sure the posts fit the rules... I don't want to imagine what it would be like moderating a space that has expanded as rapidly as r/Ukraine has. I'm sure it's gratifying too, but it's a largely thankless task.

Add in the efforts of Russian trolling and bots and you've got essentially a full time job. Really sorry if this subreddit doesn't fit in with what you expect of it, but you're entitled to build your own subreddit with Blackjack and Hookers.

3
Mind_Island•

Sooo you get more mods?.. 🙄 That's not a difficult one to work out a fix for...

Are you saying the mods of this sub deserve sympathy based on the fact that this sub is full of trolls and bots? If so, I disagree as it comes with the role. If they're struggling to the point of picking and choosing (subjectively by individual) what posts are important or valuable verses the useless dribble, that isn't something posters should be shut down for. Clearly the sub needs more mods.

Good to see my point was missed entirely again though.

1
[deleted]•

I agree, I wonder why so many people downvoted on your opinion?

2
Mind_Island•

Eh, your guess is as good as mine, mate 🤷‍♂️
